I was thinking of finally making the purchase on Nocturna, but I just realized in only has the English audio and not the original Spanish!?

From reading the review here, it seems like the English dub is pretty good, but that's still a bit disappointing. But as far as I know, this is the only BD release of this film, correct?

Only the DVD releases in Spain offered multiple languages, but there were no English subtitles.

I thought the English dub sounded good too, when watching via the older DVD release. But I don't know how accurate the English dub is, script wise.

Yes, Nocturna has only been released on Blu-Ray in the USA so far.

Thanks for the info as always. Well, then considering I don't speak or understand Spanish, it seems that the English dub would really be my only chance to see this anyway. And given that the GKIDS release is the only BD release, it makes sense to add this to my collection for sure.

Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet now has a US release date set for August 7. I'm expecting this one to definitely get a BD release down the line.

I'm really glad GKIDS picked this up for distribution, though it's not surprising considering the talent involved.

Quote:
GKIDS has announced the North American release date for the animated feature Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet. Having had its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2014, the film will finally open in New York City and Los Angeles on August 7, with US and Canadian expansion in the following weeks.

Based on the iconic 20th-century work of spiritual and philosophical prose poetry, Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet was written and directed by director Roger Allers (The Lion King, Open Season) and has been described as a passion project for actress-producer Salma Hayek. The film features the voices of Hayek, Liam Neeson, Quvenzhané Wallis, John Krasinski, Frank Langella and Alfred Molina.

Reflecting the individual essays of Gibran’s original work—the book is divided into chapters “On Freedom,” “On Good & Evil,” “On Love,” and so on—but also Gibran’s personal love of drawing, the film’s animated segments have been designed and directed, in mostly hand-drawn style, by a diverse roster of artists: Tomm Moore (Song of the Sea, The Secret of Kells), Joan Gratz (Mona Lisa Descending a Staircase), Bill Plympton (Guard Dog, Cheatin’), Nina Paley (Sita Sings the Blues), Joann Sfar (The Rabbi’s Cat), Paul and Gaetan Brizzi (“Firebird Suite” in Fantasia 2000), Michal Socha (Chick and one of the greatest all-time Simpsons openings) and Mohammed Harib (Freej). The wraparound sequences directed by Allers are toon-shaded computer animation.

I'll just leave the trailer here for those who haven't had a chance to catch it yet:

It's really easy to spot the portions directed by Tomm Moore and Nina Paley.

Jean-Loup Felicioli and Alain Gagnol are releasing their follow-up to A Cat in Paris this year. It's called Phantom Boy.

I loved A Cat in Paris, and what little is shown here is looking good. Hopefully GKIDS picks it up!

By the way, here is GKIDS' trailer for Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet. Seriously, this thing looks AMAZING.

Lightbulb The Painting Blu-ray region

Since there was no reply to this question, I decided to take matters into my own hands and bought The Painting DVD+Blu-ray combo from the american Amazon. I have some news for you...
  1. The DVD plays on my region B player. VSO Inspector as well as other software reports the DVD as region-free.
  2. The Blu-ray plays on my Blu-ray player. But I don't know if the disc and/or the player is region-free or region B...

I use Macgo Windows Bluray Player to play the Blu-ray, which works fine. It is unknown to me if Macgo can circumvent region-locks on Blu-rays. I guess neither the disc nor the physical player would have to be region-free for it to work in that case. My Blu-ray player is a Samsung TS-HB43L. It is DVD region 2 but I am unable to find out the Blu-ray region.

Sorry to leave such inconclusive results on the Blu-Ray. But I highly doubt that the Blu-ray is only region A, since the DVD is region-free, there are no region indications on the cover or the discs and my Blu-ray player was too cheap to be region-free.

Thank you almo! You have given me the confidence to purchase this title myself. When I receive it, I'll make sure to report the results here. I'm pretty sure my DMP BDT-700 is Region B, so if the disc is not region free, it will not play.

Now that leaves other titles, like Tales of the Night, The Rabbi's Cat, Ernest and Celestine and A Letter to Momo. Sigh!

Along with those, I really want Disney's Saludos Amigos, The Three Caballeros, Make Mine Music, Melody Time, The Black Cauldron and Richard Williams' workprint of The Thief and the Cobbler on blu.

I can dream.

I'll update the first post when I get the chance, but here are the releases since Song of the Sea in March:

When Marnie Was There - Oct. 6, 2015 (Universal)
Zarafa - Nov. 10, 2015 (Cinedigm)

And some upcoming releases:

Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet - Feb. 2, 2015 (Universal)
Extraordinary Tales - Feb. 2, 2015 (Cinedigm)

I ordered Zarafa on Cyber Monday, and it just shipped, should be arriving soon! (I'm glad that this actually made it to Blu-ray!)

I saw The Prophet a couple of months ago in theaters. Honestly, it was somewhat of a letdown overall. The storyline and animation for the main story segment was pretty weak. But the individual animated poem segments were quite impressive. I was especially enamoured by Tomm Moore's piece. It will be worth owning on BD just for that!

I enjoyed Zarafa, it was well worth the long wait for an English version on Blu-Ray. Studio Ghibli continues to disappoint with their recent movies though.

I'm really looking forward to seeing Phantom Boy next, I hope the wait isn't so long for that movie. I expect I will check out The Prophet eventually too.

Are 'the Boy and World', and 'Phantom Boy' the only other animated movies, which have not been released on Blu-ray/DVD yet? I hope GKids get more new titles soon.

I hadn't realized that GKIDS had aquired Phantom Boy already, though I suppose I shouldn't be surprised. Yes, definitely looking forward to that one.

As far as I know, aside from Phantom Boy and Boy and the World, they have also acquired a film called April and the Extraordinary World, as indicated in one of the articles I linked to previously. Of these, I'm pretty certain Boy and the World will be getting a BD release considering how extensively they are promoting it. Hopefully the other two will make it to BD as well.

Also, the classic Ghibli/Takahata film Only Yesterday is getting an English dub and is being released theatrically next year through GKIDS. This one is definitely sure to get a BD release considering it is a Ghibli title.

I wonder if Giovanni's Island will get a home video release via the GKIDS label on Cinedigm.... If I recall correctly, GKIDS did give it some sort of theatrical release a while back... Considering how long it took Zarafa to be released, I could see it getting a quiet release next year or something.

Extraordinary Tales got a pretty good review on this site:

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Extra...143961/#Review

It's going for $19.99 on Amazon right now, which isn't a bad starting price.

Yes! Boy and the World is coming to a theater near me on Feb 12! (It was already scheduled for another nearby theater on Feb 5, but that one is not quite as accessible to me for various reasons, so I'm glad I have this new option.)

And it looks like Only Yesterday is coming to the big theater near me on Feb 26. I don't think I can ever recall a GKIDS release ever playing there, as the GKIDS releases always play at the smaller theaters that play mostly indie and foreign films. I might check it out if I get the chance, just to see it on the big screen, since I already own the Japanese BD.

By the way, it is no surprise (especially after the Oscar nomination), but GKIDS confirmed a BD release for Boy and the World on their Facebook page after someone asked them the question.

I saw Boy and the World yesterday, fantastic movie. At first I was falling asleep (due to work fatigue) but as it went on it really hooked me until the very end. The animation and sound design was out of this world. I'm sure this will look stunning on BD.

Great to hear! It looks visually stunning judging from the trailers, and word of mouth seems great, so I'm looking forward to it. I'll probably catch it next weekend.

Interestingly, Boy and the World won a Annie Award for Best Independent Animated Feature. I was a bit surprised it beat Studio Ghibli's When Marnie was There.

I'm wouldn't really say I'm too surprised. Boy and the World had quite a bit of buzz, and GKIDS has really been promoting it. It was definitely between the two though. The Prophet had pretty mixed reception (understandably) and The Boy and the Beast just didn't have the same amount of buzz (and generally hasn't been received as well as Wolf Children).

What I was more surprised about was that both it and Marnie managed to get nominated for the Oscar. I figured there was a good chance both wouldn't make it (with The Good Dinosaur and Peanuts being elected over the two), and thought only one of them would make it at best.

I wasn't able to catch Boy and the World over the weekend. I'm planning to go see it tomorrow evening since the theater is already pulling the film after one week, unfortunately.

On another note, I got Extraordinary Tales in the mail today. I ordered from Amazon over the weekend when it dropped momentarily to $17.29. Not a bad price for a GKIDS release.
