I mean it took the Japanese over 20 years to admit that California grown sticky rice is actually just as good as their homegrown stuff... they resisted that for decades even though our rice is less than half the cost. Don't even get me started on American beef. If you want to pretend that Euro media isn't a joke then you'll have to take that journey by yourself... not even worth discussing.
No probs. Hear you loud and clear and that's interesting about the sticky rice. I could definitely see (given the culture) of exceptional ties between corporations and the media in Japan. It seems that everything in Japan is based on a well established network. However, I think that this is definitely curbed by the willingness of Japanese consumers to do their research. I may be talking out my ass on this, but I just find that what has been reported about Japanese consumer awareness of electronics is never even a close proximation of North America. I guess that awareness leads to transparency in the bias and therefore curbed in reporting. In Europe, I can only speak from what I watched and the only really terrible corporate news I saw was Euronews. The BBC and most news stations have public funding so the infiltration of corporate bias is not as extensive as let's say Microsoft with NBC, CNET, etc.

With that said, even if there is bias in Europe and Japan, at least consumers are making the right choice

I wouldn't say Japan is against HD-DVD because it's from MS, as Toshiba is behind it as well, but I think the main reason is that they "fit" better with Japanese needs. You have burner for Blu-ray, it has better storage, little harder to break, etc., so why bother with HD-DVD. I got a few Japanese DVD, and they are "skimpy" on extras, and none of them really use funky stuff, so that's nothing to them. Cost - regular stuff cost like 5000 to 8000 yen over there, so consumer aren't seeing any "savings", not to mention they are always willing to pay higher prices for new technology. Basically to them, HD-DVD doesn't offer anything better than Blu-ray they want, so it is a no-brainer for them. I still cannot think of any really good reasons for the Japanese market to like HD-DVD, except maybe due to the studios, and that's about it.

Of course, you have to take that with a grain of salt because I actually like the MD stuff that Sony came up with, as I think it's great for walkman and stuff, and it's a good replacement for listening to CD on the go. Of course now it got crushed by iPod and other MP3 players, since flash memory become so cheap. Maybe it's just me, but I see HD-DVD as the measuring system we uses here in the US - almost nobody else in the world uses them anymore, but we are still using them for whatever reason...

Fair points again but you make an interesting distinction here that I hadn't picked up on, but maybe you said before. That being "corporate bias". I was thinking general bias. I would probably agree that the U.S. media has more corporate bias than Europe, but it is at least as bad in Japan. I was initially responding to you thinking of general bias. If you are anything other than liberal you will feel a lot of political bias in European media, BBC or otherwise... they consider the American moderate as right, the American right as extreme and the American left and central or moderate.

Coming from Europe (and living in the US), I have to say that you don't seem to know too much about the way Medias report in most of Europe (at the very least England, France, Belgium and a few others). Or that you probably get your "unbiased" info about the European Medias through "unbiased" American sources

Oh, "Europe" is more than 15 countries now. Do you pretend to know and be able to label every single news media of those more than 15 countries?

I'll abstain to comment on Japan, because I haven't been there, and you got to live in a country for a good while before having an understanding of its culture and Medias.
