the main reason is because people are buying this for their HDTVs thinking that these HD DVDs alone will play in their DVD players. read the amazon reviews... you'll see the fallacy. most dumb people buy them, try to play them in their dvd players, and then realize they can't return them so they're stuck with little coasters

The used market will be awash in Planet Earth a year from now, because a solid 60-70% had no interest in the material and was buying it purely for HD porn
PRIME EXAMPLE: There are more used copies on ebay for sale46 hddvd and 41 planet earth at this time

I bet toshoba banks 15% of their sales on that factor, accidental purchase, consumer unawareness, misinformed

I am still on the fence prolly due to price. The reported visual shots in this series have definitely got me interested as I love being awed by nature and its serene effects that gazing at the mountains or beach etc. seem to have on me. So I'm thinking the PQ of this alone would be awesome.

But is the narration exciting at all? I like documentaries just fine. But for apx. 100$, I'm just not sure yet

For that type of price, I would want the whole package meaning great PQ and great story. My question to those who own or have seen this BD is, does PE really deliver on both to warrant such a price? I kinda wish that they split PE into a couple of volumes so that people like myself who are not sure could buy one volume without losing what would be to me a decent wad-o-cash.

Well Amazon has it for $67 so it's a little cheaper than you think. I liked it. It was the first Blu-Ray I bought and I still pull it out from time to time. If you like nature shows definitely pick it up. And as far as the narration goes, no offense to Sigorney Weaver, but get the BBC version.

thank you (I skimmed over this thread quickly looking for details about PE and missed previous mentions that PE is cheaper, although still $99 at my BBY) ; So does this title essentially cover the globe? Is it all terriain-based? Or are oceans included? I read several times that it shows places on Earth never seen before by many people. Could someone give example? I guess I am looking for a table of contents to this title so I can know exactly what all it covers. I have also read before that the BBC version is superior to the one with Sigourney Weaver....why is that?

sorry to ask so many ?s...seems like there is always someone either telling me in person or via these types of threads that reccomend buying PE but only give stunning PQ as core reason to buy...but then again, OP said "we need to buy more copies of PE!" so I thought I'd get as many reasons as I can to convince me to do that very thing.

I agree, David Attenborough is a much better narrarator. But to add to that point, the Discovery Channel Version is 1080i only i believe, I could be wrong though.

Default First one I got

Planet Earth was actually the first Blu-ray (set) I got, even before I got a BD player, cause I knew it was something I wanted. Then a week later I figured it was time to pick a side and just go out and buy a player. I actually got it a week before it came out too, cause Best Buy accidentally put them out earlier, and they were even willing to price match Wal-Mart. I love Best Buy .

Here is the thing, if WB has an issue and decides to sway towards HD-dud because Planet Earth is outselling the BD version then WB is not seeing the bigger picture at ALL!!!!! All other WB movies are completely blowing hd-dud versions out of the water. I say if WB jumps ship or screws us more on title releases because of this they are way more stupid then Paramount at least Paramount got paid. BUT seeing that WB just announced Terminator 3 for Dec, i feel that come CES in january WB will be seeing BLU and BLU only!!!! We will see a huge unveiling of WB plus all other studio titles come january, i cant wait!!

I just cant bring myself to spend $80 on a documentary set... Ive borrowed it and have seen it already. Its one of those titles that if I bought, I would only watch it one more time. I cant bring myself to spend $80 on a 1-time thing.

I suppose it would be worth it to use it as a reference piece though... I honestly cant decide

Here is the thing to remember. HD-dud may be outselling bluray stand alone players(not including ps3) BUT we are still killing them in disc sales. So i dont care how many freaking stand alone players they sell because they will never reach the total disc sales we have. By the end of the year, we will be out selling hd-dud in stand alone players(w/o ps3) and we will have a disc ratio of at least 3:1 if not 4:1. Mark my words, write it down it will happen because i wrote it!!!!!
