Clearly, America isn't...

I used to love Sandler, back in it 90's and early 2000's, but his movies have gotten TERRIBLE over the last eight years or so. It's honestly sad. But apparently everyone still likes his one trick pony routine, and will still flock to see it. So, if that's how they want to be, that's fine. Just makes me sad when original material doesn't do well, and loses to something so lazy...

What is Elysium? I have never heard of it, and it is not opening wide next week

Disappointing result for Pacific Rim, it will probably be a considered box office loser after its run is over. Personally, I loved it but that does not play into the equation. The Minions continue their great run towards $300M - $350M.

Finally, Man of Steel looks doubtful for $300 million domestic...could still happen, but its chances are smaller now. WWZ is now a lock for $200 million domestic .

I was tempted not to see it when I first saw the trailer. But after seeing it in front of most films I've seen this year, I think I will check it out. It does look pretty good.

Glad that WWZ has done well.

Clearly, Grown Ups 2 was better.

Same here. I saw Grown Ups 2 at 7:25, Pacific Rim at 9:40. Both were like 50% full.

TO much the dismay of the GU haters, it was pretty much constant loud laughter the whole film. People need to start going to see movies before they bash them...hence why I see everything!

Pacific Rim was a lot more quiet. There was a group of High School boys that seemed to be the only ones laughing at the humor parts. No cheers during the fighting. I smiled at ONE joke...don't recall which one. Something Charlie Day said.

But I got the feeling people generally liked GU2, but not so much with PR. Oddly...it was almost all older people at GU2, where as PR was easily 98% dudes and at 34, I was probably the elder of the theater.

I always gather my surroundings in a screening. Is that the acts of a nerd? I guess it just interests me who watches what.

If I saw the first Grown Ups, hated it and didn't laugh a single time, then I don't need to see the second movie in order to bash it.
Pacific Rim has a higher Cinemascore, so clearly people liked it better. Pacific Rim wasn't about the humor, and people didn't go to see it for that. And who the hell cheers during or after a fight scene? I see every big action movie, and there has never been that kind of response in any of the packed theater experiences Ive been too.
Seriously, if someone cheered during the movie, I'd probably turn around to look at them to express how obnoxious I think they are.

Wasn't Pacific Rim really just a homage to other stuff done before it also??? Or were you calling DM2 lazy???

In the last 8 years, Sandler has released what...16 movies!!! And they were not at all terrible.

That's My Boy and Jack & Jill....were terrible. Funny People was pretty boring.

I wasn't a huge fan of Chuck& Larry or Zohan, but both were watchable. I was turned off to C&L with all the gay bashing it seemed to do...I'm not a people hater like that I guess.

Reign Over Me, Click, Bedtime Stories, Grown Ups 1-2, 50 First Dates, Spanglish, Longest Yard, Just Go With It, Zookeeper and Hotel Transylvania were all very good and have high rewatchability imo!

Umm....people cheer at the time. I have seen big cheers in After Earth(still puzzled) to the ending of Underworld 2. When HULK smashed the poo out of Loki, that got a huge applause.

If more people liked PR, how come it came in third???

That margin wasn't that big. How much money a movie makes doesn't reflect on how people liked a movie, I mean obviously, doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out. You said it yourself, that people shouldn't bash GU2 if they haven't seen it so clearly you don't think either that people can't say which they liked better if they haven't seen both.

sad Pacific PR is not doing very well. Probably gonna be super front loaded as well. and With 2 other action/comedies coming out next weekend this is probably gonna fall 60-70% which makes me so mad as it is such a fun movie .
Really doubt this will even get to $100 million here in the US which is probably what they spent on marketing alone.

Hope it wont be a complete loss for Legendary (screw Warner Bros, they are awful) and we get a Hellboy 3 over at Universal now.

It will be interesting to see what budgets Del Toro will be restricted to from now on... The only two times he even made back his budget domestically, as a director, were Pan's Labyrinth ($19 million budget vs $37.6 million domestic gross) and Blade II ($54 million vs $82.4 million).

Note that is not factoring in the the marketing and general need to gross 2 to 3x the actual budget. Doing that, it even looks worse, because technically, the international number don't help overall.

Blade 2 and Pans Labyrinth made very good money considering the budgets. Blade 2 made made about 3 times its budget worldwide and PL did over 4 times its budget worldwide.

So basically Blade II didn't break even until home video (If even then depending on the points Snipes got, and didn't pay taxes...) and Pan's Labyrinth made it's money theatrically.

Still not a good track record for an "A-List" director.

Hellboy 3 and a sequel to Pacific Rim will not be happening without reduced budgets.

Guillermo Del Toro is not an A-list director, A-list directors are known by pretty much everybody and not just people like us who watch a lot of movies. A-list directors make studios enough hits that they can get financing for that risky "art" or "self-indulgent" film they want to make that might not get the best box office return. If Del Toro were an A-list director, he would've already made Hellboy 3 just because he wanted to, it's not like Perlman's getting any younger.
