if you guys haven't checked this site out yet, its worth a look. Its listing for all the different version of JC films on dvd and blu ray. and gives you info on them.

Yes, nice site, and the author (drees5761) is active here, in this topic too. Still, the site omits the first JC starring role film, The Cub Tiger From Kwang Tung from 1973. This is the original movie from which the butchered Master with Cracked Fingers / Snake Fist Fighter was made.

Hong Kong Legends did come back and it was shuttered within less than a year of "relaunching." CineAsia, which is also now no longer in operations, bought the rights to the HKL brand, logo, and all elements from Enterrainment One. CineAsia actually repressed a numberl of HKL DVDs that had gone out of print.

They did, but the problem was they repressed the discs that everyone already had, such as the Bruce Lee movies and Jackie Chan titles, instead of titles that were wanted by fans and were rare such as Hapkido or Dreadnaught. Overall Cine Asia were a good label, i was shocked when they went under.

HKL's Dreadnaught is the DVD equivalent of a unicorn.

We've all heard about it, but has anyone actually seen one?

Sorry, bu I just don't believe that to be the case. With proper treatment and marketing, I am sure that most of his back catalog would sell like hot cakes.

That was plain BS! They only re-issued some releases that were OOP. New label art and cover art doesn't mean anything when the demand is for new releases.

I agree and the keywords are "With proper treatment and marketing". Shout Factory complains these movies are poor sellers but they don't understand that if you release a crappy product, people aren't going to buy it. Every one already owns at least one crappy DVD or blu-ray of these movies. No one has any desire to add yet another one to their collection. But if you give a Criterion-like treatment to these movies, I have no doubt that you can get fans to buy it again and pay a premium price for it.

Their sci fi/horror movies are big sellers because they are quality releases. If they released those sci fi/horror movies in the same manner they are releasing the Hong Kong movies, they would be poor sellers just like the Hong Kong movies.

I'm actually pretty sure that the upconverted Jackie Chan classics such as Police Story 1 and 2, Project A and Dragons Forever, etc. outsells many movies that Criterion picks for their lineup.

You better believe it. IIRC CineAsia had to take back a huge load of their dvd's/Blu-rays from actual shops in UK because the items just weren't sold at all, even with them put out nicely on their own special shelves AND with huge discounts!

But this wasn't the case with CineAsia. They had very nice releases.

I disagree, it's like you're comparing apples to oranges. IHMO scifi/horror market is much much bigger than JC or HK niche market. EDIT: Also I doubt the causality you postulate.

An example: the "nordic" area releases (Finland/Sweden/Norway/Denmark) of Jackie Chan movies are very scarce. I've 5 "nordic" Jackie Chan blu-rays (counting out kungfu panda et al. releases) and 26 dvs's. That's less than half of all JC movies I have. It's hard to sell even very rare items in my country, there's just very very little interest.

I think that many of you are overestimating the market potential.

The U.S. seems to treat these movies with either little or no respect, it seems. Most of the JC movies have been butchered like animals for a feast. DD did the best they could for some of the releases and SF are working with what they got. But, what can be done? Fortune Star holds the reigns here. Unless they are willing to sell the catalog then you have to take what they give you or pass. There are still a lot of great movies that I would love to see come out on blu even though I know that they will be upscales. It seems that people should care about these movies and give them the respect they deserve but if you can buy 4 of Jackie`s movies on a blu ray for $6 then why would you pay $30 for one? I might, you might, but the average joe who knows who JC is but does not care like we do, probably does not.

Fortune Star must have some kind of idea what it costs to transfer film to HD. SO, they must figure that the cost of it may not be worth what they can sell. It`s catch-22. They could spend the money to do do the transfers and hope that that increases sales. Or, they can use what they have and know about what their sales will be.

Call me crazy, but on some level I actually like that the 80's classics are not in pristine HD. Hong Kong productions never used the best equipment or materials and the K&R Blu-rays remind me of the good ol' days when I used to watch Police Story 2 on VHS. So I'm really not that bothered with the old movies being in the quality they are

1. I collect JC
2. I like a blue case
3. Because I can
4. And on a serious note, they still look better on Blu-ray rather than an upscaled dvd.

Fair enough..:-)
I would not waste my money when i can upscale my own dvd's on my Blu ray player and spend my money on REAL HD discs, not some phoney item.
They will look slightly better but not enough to justify supporting a company (Fortune Star) who con the public.

Rank your 10 favorite Jackie Chan movies in order and if possible, name your least favorite!
