While excited for any Star Wars movie, including a stand alone Obi-Wan film (if Ewan McGregor returns) I am slightly confused as to why this would get a green light over a stand alone Darth Vader movie.

That would be awesome, man. It'd be great to find out just why Owen dislikes Obi-Wan so much.

Rumor: Could A Ewan McGregor Obi-Wan Centric ‘Star Wars’ Trilogy Happen?

It’s raining Star Wars rumors this week and we’re not talking small ones either. Fresh off the huge rumor about the second Anthology film centering on Han Solo and Boba Fett’s past, another rumor has surfaced. This one not only purposes the focus of a new Star Wars movie, but in fact a whole new trilogy.

According to the rumor, Disney and Lucasfilm have been talking to Ewan McGregor about returning to the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi not just for one film, for three. Which we’ve heard before but now may be more focused. Read more about the Ewan McGregor Star Wars rumor below.

Like the Solo/Fett rumor, this comes from Schmoes Know. They’re very clear to label this a rumor so don’t think of this as gospel, but this is the second time we’ve heard something along these lines. Last Fall, Cinelix reported three Obi-Wan movies were in the works for McGregor, but that they’d all be independent of each other. Now it’s the Schmoes’ belief it’s more of a trilogy and there’s a possibility these films could be in addition to the Anthology films as well as Episodes. Could it mean a time we get two Star Wars movies a year? Again – all huge rumors so be careful.

Breaking this down, Ewan McGregor has said time and time again he’d come back to Star Wars. His portayal of Kenobi is one of the universal bright spots in the Prequel Trilogy and his star has only continued to rise. (The same can be said for Liam Neeson and Natalie Portman too, probably even more so, but – spoiler alert – they’re characters are both dead.)

For the proposed trilogy – or even a single film – to make sense, it would have to take place between Episodes III and IV, which is what the report says. But that’s also a time period that’s now being well-mined. There’s Star Wars Rebels, there’s Rogue One, and Kenobi even dropped a brief animated cameo in Rebels. So we know he’s out there.

What we don’t know, in the new Star Wars canon, is what – if anything – Kenobi did on Tatooine in those years. How did he look after a growing Luke? How did “Obi-Wan” become “Ben?” Could this story bring in characters from The Clone Wars TV show – mainly, Darth Maul – who are still lingering? Will Kenobi leave the planet? If there are three movies, you’d think so.

What we do know is this: If Lucasfilm makes one or three Obi-Wan Kenobi films, he won’t interact with Darth Vader. It would almost certainly be a story very much on the fringes of the main Episodes.

I loved this rumor last year and love it even more know. I’m dying to learn more about Kenobi through the eyes of McGregor. What do you think about this rumor?

WOOOOOOOOOOHHH!!! I would love an Obi-Wan trilogy with Ewan reprising his role (not reprising = much less interest). Of all the rumors for the side movies, this one really peaks my interest the most.

If Disney let me choose what anthology they would make, I would choose an Obi-Wan film in a heartbeat.

Ewan is the perfect age for it, and seeing the Dark Ages in live action would be great. Maybe they could bring back Joel Edgerton to play Uncle Owen, could make for some interesting conversations that are hinted at in Episode IV.

Im actually okay with a new Star Wars film with all the same prequel actors to remind people what an awful director George Lucas is. Under a better director who knows how to use special effects not in an overkill way and work well with actors, McGregor, Neeson, Portman, Jackson, Lee, McDiarmid, Temura Morrison, and even Hayden and Ahmad Best would all shine. I would love to just see one or two prequel reboots which would erase the previous ones but not make the Clone Wars cartoons obsolete.

Don't understand the McGregor / Obi love as I found his performance across the 3 films to be poor. However, with a stronger script and better direction I think he could turn it around; he certainly has the talent to do so.

I'll literally throw my life savings at Disney if they give me an Obi Wan and Qui-Gon movie with Ewan McGreggor and Liam Neeson.

Wasn't Obi-Wan living as a hermit in between Ep 3 and 4?

Yes, but there is plenty of time between III and IV to go around on new quests. There could be plenty of "help be Obi-Wan Kenobi" moments throughout. Disney has a lot of time to play with in between the PT and OT.

You could have situations where Obi saves a town and its people from a depraved Empire official, like an old Western. Or you could have Obi falling in love but ultimately staying true to his Jedi vows despite the temptation, whilst the overarching threat of the Galactic Empire hangs ominously in the air. There's so many places they could take this if they were a bit imaginative. OR if they wanted to take things into a mystical direction, they could show us things like Obi conversing with Jedi masters who have passed on, and warnings from about the future, etc. Actually I'm getting excited just thinking about it, lol.

I'm sure he had some adventures throughout the years unbeknownst to the Lars, until he's gotten too old for this sort of thing and took Luke with him on his last mission.

None of those missions involving Vader I reckon.

Isnt the entire series basically a "Darth Vader" movie though? Anakin is one of if not THE main character in the whole series, IMO. Its his story-arc that drives the films.

As for the Obi-wan thing.... I feel we know what we need to about him already. We know him from the prequels(as a fairly young man) and we also know that he went into "hiding" more or less at the conclusion of ROTS. He then reappears much later/older and fulfills his destiny by the end of the original trilogy. He never had any love interests(unless he met a hermit-chick on tatooine, lol), never started a business, never really did much which is par for the course for the Monk-like jedi.

What Im asking is: What do we need to know about Ben that we dont already? Is there really a stand alone film's worth of content there for him? Do we really care about his pre-pubescent years? Do we care about what he was doing on tatooine for all of those years? I dont see why we would...but we'll see.

We know he still has unfinished business with
[Show spoiler]Darth Maul. I would love to see an aging Obi-Wan face Darth Maul for the last time. Maul's story was never properly wrapped up in the Clone Wars, and we know the Emperor had plans for him. Bringing Ray Park back as Maul would make the fanboy in me scream with delight. It would also give Ian McDiarmid the opportunity to reprise his role as Palpatine.
