I love Dreamcatcher. It's overstuffed with neat ideas and made with a wink, bursting at the seams with 4 movies' worth of content artfully compressed into 135 inspired, gonzo minutes. Does it go off the rails? Well, when you ram The Big Chill into Independence Day broadside--pick your genre mash-up--something has gone off the rails. But it's a knowing collision--not an accident--with Kasdan at full throttle, hopped up on coffee--or somethin' else--and a smile on his face. Take your Dramamine, and watch it twice. As you can see here in the polarized forum, if Dreamcatcher is your cup off odd, you'll quaff with relish.

Dreamcatcher is what it is. I really like it, but it's very weird.
When I first watched it, I kind of felt like there were 2 different movies going on. I wasn't sure exactly what was happening, but I dug it anyway. The scene of the guy on the toilet though... I was so disturbed by that, I was nervous to take a crap for weeks. |

I thought $9 was a very fair price. I saw this one in the theater in 2003 (I keep my ticket stubs) and watching it again last night was definitely welcome as I had not seen it since about 2005. The PQ is superb especially for a Warner title that is over a decade old. Does anyone know if it was the same master that was used for the DVD or was this remastered?

Wasn't it curious how in 2003 they advertised the movie like this supernatural thriller with zero mention of it being basically a monster movie. I remember a critic pointing that out, almost as if Warner was ashamed of what they made.

Yeah, I went thinking it was going to be supernatural thriller rather an alien invasion film.

This is one of the best "bad movies", created in the last ten years. I understand why so many people hate it; it has tons of flaws and it is the most unfocused movie ever. However, I love this movie, despite its faults....
Watching the Blu-ray today, reminded me of what I like so much about this movie. The characters are exceptionally well written. This is the rare Stephen King movie, where the director has seemingly captured King's voice. I've never read the book of Dreamcatcher, but I've read enough of King's work to feel that these characters are the personalities that would actually spring forth from King's mind. The Shining is an absolute classic, but do the characters feel like King? Nah, that movie is Kubrick all the way. Credit here, also has to go to the actors. The cast is great, and they absolutely sell every minute of this movie; the dramatic minutes as well as the hokey ones. Therefore, Dreamcatcher pulls off a rare cinematic feat...it actually makes me give a crap when a character dies. Usually, I can't wait for a character to die in a horror movie....in this, I want every character to live. So yeah, I understand the two star review. This isn't a very good movie from a traditional view point, but it hits all the right buttons for me and the release date pricing of the Blu-ray was perfect! |

This x 1,000 + the grossly misguided, dare I say offensive, casting of Donnie Wahlberg as a character with Down Syndrome. Change those two train wreck elements, and only then could we end up with a film at the level of quality of the production team that created it.
