Burn can be heard on some of the other language tracks on the bluray. But it doesn't sound as great as my memory when watching it on HBO cable 20 years ago. Don't understand why it isn't on the main language tracks.

Probably a rights issue. That is odd if that's the reason since I remember the song being made specifically for the film.

I watched this last night after not seeing the film in about 15 years. Probably the last time I saw it was on Laserdisc! Boy I forgot how hit and miss this film is. Some things work brilliantly as satire (Like the whole "I Love Mallory" sit-com) and other things just don't. Some great performances are unfortunately buried in the chaos of the editing. Personally, I'd like to see a straight adaption of the original Tarantino screenplay.
What about the bluray transfer?

So I assume the only way to purchase this currently is in the 3 movie set with JFK & Any Given Sunday?

Outside of the WB intro and credits, can anyone point out any serious telecine wobble in the film? Some have said it's pretty bad, but when I checked it, I didn't notice any during the film.

I just watched this last night. The only times I noticed telecine wobble was when there was text on the screen during the opening credits. Noticeable because we expect the text to be steady.

I was lucky enough to find the Diamond Luxe Edition for $20 on Ebay.

Was watching the Director's Cut on my Panasonic DPUB820 and it pixelates and freezes at approximately 52:53. The disc is flawless, not a mark on it. It is repeatable. Tried it 3 times. (Yes, I cleaned the disc even though it is flawless.)

Tried it in my Oppo BDP93 and it plays with no problem.

I'd love to know if this disc works on anyone else's Panny 820.

Thanks

That's what I thought. I have seen some films with horrible telecine wobble and this one was not one of those. It was steady throughout outside of the intro.

Oof. Just popped the '09 Director's Cut Blu-ray (US) into the player and holy crap, the Telecine wobble is off the charts. Contrary to previous comments on this thread, the image is twitching throughout the entire presentation. Maybe this level of transfer flew back in '09, but now it's embarrassing to see. Hopefully this will be slated for a new release, because this is borderline unwatchable. My 2¢.

Sorry to bump so many threads at once, but I have a weird question about NBK.

I was playing my 2014 Diamond Luxe Blu-ray last night, and found that while some soundtracks have "Burn" by Nine Inch Nails at the end, other ones have some generic stock music at the end.

For those who don't know or haven't heard the difference, a comparison can be heard here:

Can we all check our copies to see what's at the end? There might be some other unedited tracks out there.

2023 4K/Blu-ray - Unknown, as Shout said they are still unsure of the son'gs status but that many people have explicitly mentioned it to them.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, sorry for bumping all these threads.

Edit 1: 2009 Blu-ray info provided by Jay H.

Edit 2: 1999 DVD now has correct date, I should've done more research there. Also, hungrywives provided the information on the 2001/2004 WHV DVDs (same disc, most likely the same disc as the 2007 DVD too) and the 1999 Trimark/200? Lionsgate DVD. hungrywives also provided me with the correct 1999 release date for the Trimark DVD, which I then verified on eBay. (It was released in 1999, but nearly every copy on eBay is erroneously listed as being from 2000.

Edit 3: 2001 VHS is updated, and 2023 4K is included.

Also, Agent Kay verified that the 1995 laserdisc's standard tracks are the original version, and the 1996 Pioneer laserdisc's standard tracks are edited.

There was a director's cut laserdisc planned by WB but it got cancelled, but so far I haven't seen any evidence of any test discs, files, transfers, etc that leaked. It's unknown how far that laserdisc actually got before it was cancelled.

I don't know if it's related, but Trent Reznor sued his ex-manager John Malm (and won) in 2005, so maybe the US rights for Burn were tied into a Malm deal somehow?

If that is correct that a 1996 VHS was already edited/changed, then it's very unlikely related. Unless that suit started in 96, but I doubt that. The article says Trent noticed in 2003, and the 3 week trail wrapped in 2005.

Maybe Burn was temp song that found it's way in on accident?
Really doubt that too, since the visuals fit perfect with the music during it's brief playing time. Certainly fits better than the drums that replaced them.

When I get to my computer, I’ll copy/paste something Oliver Stone said about Reznor and his involvement with the film. If you read between the lines where Stone kisses his own ass, you’ll hear that Reznor actually wrote “Burn” and several other songs exclusively for NBK. The 1996 VHS is weird, within 15 minutes it plays a NIN song over the news clips, then the stock music where “Burn” was, then Leonard Cohen’s “The Future” over the credits, pop in Tape Two, Stone praises Reznor and NIN and “Burn”, and then there’s the “Burn” music video. Weird shit.

Speaking of the stock music, it can be found in the leaked workprint on Archive.org, mainly as a stand-in for the final audio mix. It was literally a temp track most likely from some stock library that WB has access to. If you then go to the alternate ending, the same track can be heard there. Also, a different temp track is there in place of the first NIN song that played as Mickey and Mallory walk away from the camera.

Edit: Here's that Oliver Stone quote, which appears just seconds into the second tape of NBK from 1996. Same Tape Two in both the fullscreen and widescreen editions.

Quote:
Oliver Stone: "When we were shooting the movie…we had written uh, a lot of, uh, music, uh, into the script and (tape damage) above all I wanted to capture one America and its flavor, which I had heard recently was the uh Nine Inch Nails uh, music, and I thought…'let's take a shot,' so we sent, uh…we asked, uh, that, them, to come and see the movie, they did, in various stages. Trent Reznor, uh, uh, came back again and again and again, he was…absolutely riveted by the movie and he, in fact, he brought Dr. Dre in, and Dr. Dre brought Snoop Dogg in, so there was all this kinda like procession of people that were going through and really digging the music and Interscope Records, Jimmy Iovine, wanted his house to back it. Trent, uh, got deeply involved, and ended up producing the album and…uh…he was, I, um, I think he was so, uh, influenced by the movie that he himself, uh, created and filmed, uh, a lot of his own, uh, music video, in, in, which you're about to see, it's called 'Burn', and it's based on the…uh, ideas, uh, of the movie, and the, the sense of…childhood traumas also choking you off, and uh, leading to this…cycle of violence. It's one of the strongest songs I've ever heard from…Trent Reznor."
TL;DR, Reznor created "Burn" explicitly for NBK. Deleting it would basically be like dropping any of the Bond songs from their films, or "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" from The Lion King. While music rights issues are a dime a dozen, removing a song that was literally made just for that movie is a move that's in a class by itself.

As a side note, the tape damage is because the last guy used red electrical tape to poorly splice the tape, and I only found out after I got home. Isn't it great to be a collector?

I used to have this and it definitely had Burn at the end. I picked up the Diamond Luxe Blu a while back from Dollar General for $5 and still haven't watched it. Sucks to know that they changed the music.

The clip you played was actually the first time I've ever heard the alternate song with the drumming crap. Sticks out like a sore thumb... The Trimark DVD with Burn at the end is all I've ever known!
