I own that set too, it's pretty awesome! Especially the cards and the storyboards :P I have the whole series on LaserDisc as well. Man I've always said I'd cut off my own arm for EoE on Blu-ray...better start then :P I thought that this would happen after the rights went to Khara, including all the copyrights etc.

So in other words:

-The complete 26-episode TV series, plus the four "Director's Cut" (AKA, New Production Cuts) episodes.

-The original cut of "Death" plus the genuine version of "Rebirth."

-I'm assuming the original theatrical cut of End of Eva?

-The complete movie edition with the final cuts of "Death" and End of Eva.

(I don't actually recall off the top of my head whether there were different versions of EoE released.)

I can only recall two major variants of The End of Evangelion:

- The standard one found on almost all releases (including the US release from Manga Entertainment)
- The "Genesis Version" found only in Japan on the Genesis 0:13 + 0:14 VHS/LDs and pre-Renewal DVD Volume 7. As it was the first home video release of The End of Evangelion (the standard version release wouldn't come out until several months later), many early fansubs were based on this version.

The major differences between the two versions are outlined in the Evageeks Wiki.

That said, there might have been some slight changes in presentation between the Japanese theatrical release of "The End of Evangelion" in July 1997 and the "Revival of Evangelion" theatrical re-release in March 1998, but there's really no available documentation (at least in English). In contrast, the changes between Death, Death(True), and Death(True)² are much more well-known.

Such wonderful news!

With this, I'll be selling my NGE Platinum DVDs (whoever gets it will be without the booklets) + 2 movies on eBay sometime later as I wanna get the Blu-rays but only when FUNimation releases it. Thank god New Video Group doesn't own the licence to NGE or we'd be screwed.

I'm guessing FUNimation will be having a Limited Edition and the Standard Edition, well, I guess I'll go with the Standard Edition unless the Limited Edition is really worth it.

My Platinum Booklets 1-7:

Getting a little ahead of yourself, dude, they haven't even made a full announcement of the Japanese set yet.

In all likelihood, Funimation will probably license the release... in 2-3 years or so. If they don't mind selling the series and not having it for a few years, it's probably OK as it will surely come to the US.

This is my thinking as well. As far as I know 3.33 still doesn't have an official release date, despite having been available for pre-order for over a year now. They're in no hurry to release it.

Being a big fan of the English dub for Eva, I pray for the rare chance it might be included. It's a dub that the actors and writers put so much effort into, probably one of.. if not THE best english dub for an anime series.

I agree. Most English dubs feel mechanical and the intonations don't match the on screen scenario. The dub and voice actor choices for the original NGE were so good it felt like the anime was created in North America rather than Japan.

It's a shame Matt Greenfield didn't direct everything....I think the series turned out the best...

I still think the Bebop dub > NGE dub. But NGE dub is no slouch, I watch the series and movie twice, once subbed and once dubbed, every year.

Maybe I just haven't watched it for a long time, but I thought the NGE dubs were awful. The Rebuild voices seemed like an improvement.

You guys are making my jaw drop, and not just because I'm one of the board's resident subtitle curmudgeons.

Evangelion's dub is, at best...terribly mediocre.

Miscasting abounds, several characters sound too old or young, tones in portrayals are way off, and worst of all nobody has any sense of change or progression through the series. It's especially a shame considering how stellar the original Japanese cast was.

That's not even getting into Manga's approach of "let's add f-bombs and cartoon sound effects because we can."

I'm not saying you can't like it--feel free to--but to hail it as one of the industry's best is just...wow...

Just out of curiosity, who do you think was miscast?

That's an incredibly broad statement though. Too Young, Too Old, Progression etc etc. Anyone can whip out those comments.

F bombs? I can't recall any off the top of my head. The tame ones maybe.. Shite, Bastard, *****.

Cartoon sound effects? I take if you mean the one example of Misato killing a solider in End of Evangelion? Big whoop.

Also, how do you 'miss cast' a voice actor? They don't need to sound exactly like the japanese equivalent. The original DBZ Goku actor tried it, and it sounded ridiculous (2 minutes).

What sounds good in Japanese, doesn't sound good in English.

The only instance I can think of once again comes from Misato in EoE.

EDIT: and come to think of it, Shinji in that horrible hospital scene.

I really do like the dub in general, but that blood splat sound effect in EoE is by far one of the worst things I ever heard. It comes off so comedic, it ruins the mood of the film completely. Just thinking about it annoys me still to this day.

(First of all, I want to state that I have not watched the TV dub all the way through, but sampled it heavily throughout when I first bought ADV's Perfect Collection twelve years ago, and I haven't seen it since (obviously I'm not going to watch more of something I find unpleasant). I believe I've seen all of End of Eva dubbed. I have not heard Funimation's dub for Rebuild.)

To start with, Shinji, but that's more due to me hating Spike Spencer than with anything particular to Evangelion.

I think Allison Keith was flat out miscast as Misato: she voices a teasing/no-nonsense/vulnerable 29-year-old woman like an acid reflux-affected teenage girl. Tiffany Grant is fine as Asuka, but I wonder if it would have been more suitable if she and Keith had switched roles.

Amanda Winn-Lee is fine as Rei, but she performs the character as far too much of a blank slate and without emotion. If you listen to Megumi Hayashibara in the role, she isn't emotionless: her emotions are muted, but there's still a delicateness and fragility to her performance.

I remember Tristan MacAvery (Gendo) and Guil Lunde (Fuyutsuki) being good on the show, but like above, not a good fit with their respective parts, and should have switched roles. Regardless, MacAvery is no Fumihiko Tachiki, that's for sure.

Aaron Krohn would have been fine as Kaji if he didn't play the character so forcibly cheerful all the time.
[Show spoiler]At its worst, I feel it ruins the scene where Kaji tells Asuka his class trip was cancelled by Second Impact: Kōichi Yamadera delivers the line seriously while Krohn is extremely sarcastic with his.

Suzuhara had three voice actors in the TV dub?! Whatever, I thought Joe Pisano was fine, and his delivery on the line "don't worry, I'll have enough fun for both of you!" was great.

I don't remember much of Sue Ulu's performance as Ritsuko, other than she has nowhere near the tragic depth of Yuriko Yamaguchi.

Finally, Keel Lorenz: Rick Peeples and Tom Booker are absolutely no substitution for Mugihito.

Additionally, no one in either ADV/Manga dub pronounces "Evangelion" correctly: it's "eh-vangelion" (like "evangelism"), not "ay-vangelion," not "ee-vangelion." This is something which had become ingrained with fans, and I know it's pretty insignificant, but it still drives me crazy.

I'm not asking for an exact equivalent, I'm just asking for a good performance from a good actor, and maybe for parties involved in ADR to at least look at what the original performers do as a guideline rather than doing their own thing entirely (dub actors rarely see the shows they're doing dubbed).

More than anything, I was just shocked to see mediocrity lauded as a masterpiece.
