Still, I'm guessing it doesn't augur well for any further UHD BD releases from Flicker Alley. I certainly thought it was strange that a company who puts out BD-R releases of the likes of A Page of Madness and J'Accuse (1919) was suddenly getting into Ultra HD Blu-ray in the first place.
Does that imply no smilebox on Flying Clipper?

I got my copy of Der Hund von Baskerville yesterday. Watched the 1929 version. A very fun movie. Missing about 12 minutes near the beginning due to lost reels. But the restoration team came up with a clever way to fill in the gap, I think. The film definitely shows its age -- a lot of wear and tear and wobbliness -- but overall I think it's a great transfer and a fun film. The extras are great -- I learned a lot about the movie's history and about A. Conan Doyle.

Just placed my order.

I'm not the biggest fan of silent cinema, but this looks to be an essential experience for someone who loves Sherlock Holmes on film.

Also, the 1916 version of Sherlock Holmes with William Gillette which also was released by FA if you don't have it

I don't believe anyone has posted this information already, but I received my order with Der Hund von Baskerville and got a free calendar outlining new releases this year, including

- The Man Who Laughs (1928), restored by Universal Home Entertainment with a new score by the Berklee School of Music
- The City Without Jews (1924), restored by the Filmarchiv Austria
- Spring Night, Summer Night (1967), reconstructed and restored in 4K by Nicholas Winding Refn and the Cinema Preservation Alliance
- Trapped! (1949), restored by the Film Noir Foundation
- 3D Rarities Volume 2
- The Last Warning (1929), restored by Universal Home Entertainment with a new score by Arthur Barrow
- A Little Princess (1917), restored in 4K by the Mary Pickford Foundation with a new score by Julian Ducantenzeiler
- Mother (1926), The End of St. Petersburg (1927) and Storm Over Asia (1928), restored by Lobster Films

- ETA a title I missed: Fragment of an Empire (1929), restored by the SFSFF, EYE FIlmmuseum and Gosfilmofond of Russia.

2019 is certainly shaping up to be a very strong release year.

WOW! Very much looking forward to some of these releases, especially The Man Who Laughs. Nice to see another Mary Pickford film coming, too. I always enjoy her work.

I haven't read about the film, but I thought I recall seeing The City Without Jews in the news last year, but I don't remember in what context. I'll have to look into it again.

Yes. The Man Who Laughs, more noir, The Last Warning, and more Mary Pickford. 2019 is shaping up as a great year

Great to see Flicker Alley is now licensing from Universal, especially since there's more silents being restored by them.

I do hope that The Man Who Laughs has the Movietone score as an option in addition to the new score since it's quite lovely. They've included alternate scores and cuts before, but it would be nice to be able to get rid of my Kino DVD finally.

The French blu ray that came out Jan 30 has the movietone soundtrack along with removable subtitles and region free. The restoration looks excellent and is the full domestic version which the Kino DVD was not and was missing some shots.

What about the Charley Bowers set? I saw that was mentioned on Nitrateville. Any info on that?

I just took a closer look and the dates on the calendar have some mentions about premiere dates for Charley Bowers shorts, birthdays of writers, etc. No information about the restorations otherwise. These ones are named specifically:

Many a Slip (1927)
Say Ah Ah (1928)
Whoozit (1928)
Nothing Doing (1927)
The Extra Quick Lunch (1918)
Egged On (1926)

I will also note that My Best Girl (1927) and Sparrows (1926) are mentioned within this area of the calendar - again, no further information is provided, although it's already been established that the Mary Pickford Foundation is undertaking their new transfers.

That's a shame, as I would have bought it again if they chose to release a Blu-ray. I would suggest keeping an eye on eBay if you still want the DVD, occasionally there will be one listed for 40-50USD or under (if you are willing to risk going the pre-owned route, however I've seen new copies go for this little).

Bowers box set? I asked them last year about Sparrows and they said they would be interested if/when the restoration became available. Finally, I wonder if they or CineMuseum will release the Mack Sennett Vol 2 since it says CineMuseum is working on a Vol 2 and they worked with FA to release Vol 1. Noticed this over at CineMuseum:

Quote:
The Mack Sennett Collection - Volume Two

Volume Two of the award winning collection!

Another fifty (50) fully restored short subjects and features produced by the King of Comedy, Mack Sennett. Slapstick comedy at its finest. Pre-ordering begins in early 2019!

Does Flicker send an email when an order is dispatched? I purchased Der Hund von Baskerville on the 19th, but have only received the immediate order confirm email. No problem, just wondering.

Also, Beaver's review of the film is up:

Not usually. It generally takes 3-5 days. Though if you sign up to USPS Informed Delivery you can track the shipment assuming you're in the US.
