I really hope they fix the
[Show spoiler]stock sound effects for the monster
on the bluray. Surely I can't be the only one that is bothered by that.

One of my only minor gripes with the movie...
[Show spoiler] I'm assuming that pterodactyl screech is not used as often in Australia as it is here in the states.
I wouldn't bet on seeing it 'fixed' for the blu-ray release.

I wasn't expecting much when I was watching it for the first time, and boy was I surprised! Definitely best horror of 2014.

I guess it bugs me because I would think a
[Show spoiler]sound designer would find monster sounds be the most fun to come up with something for, even just silence
, but to use that... man. Good movie otherwise.

Glad everyone in here seems to enjoy it so much. I left the theater completely underwhelmed and disappointed. Not a single thing was scary, it didn't leave me distraught or disturbed. The only thoughts I had on the film were how much people had built it up and how it failed to meet expectations.

I read/viewed some non spoiler impressions/reviews & many said that the movie was not intended to be scary. It was marketed that way to get butts in the seats. I read it was disturbing though, so sorry it didn't meet your expectations on that note.

I can't wait to watch it, might rent it first though.

I don't find it scary either, but I still consider it the best horror film released in years. The characters and story are engaging and the Babadook is a compellingly creepy villain that actually represents something.

The whole underlying metaphor reminded me of some of my all-time favorites in the genre. Carrie is about the fear of being unaccepted, The Thing about trust and paranoia, Eraserhead about fatherhood, etc. The Babadook fits nicely into that mold.

I agree. The subtlety of the film reels me in. It's a good, little horror story. From reading this thread and the other thread in another area of this forum, so many people walked away with different interpretations, which is always cool and fun. It seems the filmmakers are keeping it ambiguous as well.

The fact that the Babadook worked better as a metaphor than as a monster was one of the reason's why I didn't find the film scary and why the film didn't really work for me.

To each his own. A movie like The Conjuring may be more overtly scary if we're tallying "Gotcha!" moments, but I walked away underwhelmed because the characters and scenarios were so forgettable.

Yeah I never got the Conjuring love either, I thought it was pretty pissweak actually. I didn't 'love' Babadook and once was more than enough, but I can see why people liked it. It was just a bit too 'pretentious student film' to me.

I hated The Conjuring and James Wan represents everything I don't like about modern mainstream horror films. I at least respect The Babadook for being more ambitious than that, but in the end I was neither scared nor particularly engaged by the film.

I liked the 2 Insidious film, but apart from that he's pretty terrible.

If you don't like modern mainstream horror films this movie should have been for you.

No it's not scary. That aspect I felt was over-hyped. Though a friend of mine doesn't get scared by any movies. She loves horror movies and has been looking for something to scare her for so long. This did it for her. She couldn't sleep the night we watched it. So to each their own. I thought it had a creepy atmosphere but it's more an overwhelming sense of dread than anything. I still think it's one of the very best horror films of 2014. So smart and well-done. There's plenty beneath the surface here to analyze. Essie Davis is absolutely Oscar-worthy.

I haven't seen this yet--I plan to sometime this week--but thought I would chime in to the discussion.

In my opinion the way many horror films have been produced for the last decade or so has done a lot to damage audience perceptions of what "scary" and being scared actually mean. The jump scares and loud audio stingers so many films depend on aren't scary, they're startling, and that's a totally different sensation from being scared. They aren't effective enough to trigger dread or paranoia, or last long enough for the viewer to start feeling tension or adrenaline. You go to bed maybe feeling uncomfortable because you saw something unpleasant, but it's not the same as walking through your dark house with a broom handle even though you know monstrous aliens or Assyrian demons don't exist. Good horror makes you dread things long after they're over: it doesn't just shove you and scream "BOO OMG!."

There's a streetlight outside my house I always expect to see Jason Voorhees standing underneath; I never expect to see Mr. Boogie or Annabelle! because there's nothing genuinely scary about them.

This was tedious, overrated stuff and no mistake.
The Conjuring/Oculus>Babadook.

I have yet to see The Babadook. Pretty awesome that Scream is releasing it; hopefully we will get some sweet extras and awesome reversible cover art.

I am unfamiliar with Scream Factory releasing a current film exclusively (outside of Chiller films). You guys think it will be basically the UK or Ozzie content or will SF be doing their individual treatment?
