This is a war of attrition to hinder adoption rates so that they and bedfellow Microsoft can trumpet in the age of the Digital Download. THey still have DVD revenues to offset the losses.
Yes, I believe Toshiba will press until the end. I believe they are willing to lose tens of millions now to recoup hundreds of millions if MS can get a Digital Download format standardized for mass consumption. Just my 2 cents. |

Stay away from the ether, man. That stuff kills so many brain cells it can even make hd dvd seem like a good purchase. Last edited by richard lichtenfelt; 12-03-2007 at 06:53 AM. |

I don't see how Toshiba, a hardware manufacturer and (unlike Sony) not being vertically integrated to the point of producing content, would gain anything from downloads. That would require a change of business plan for them.

Not until Microsoft blows through the wad of cash that they are willing to spend on this boondoggle.

They could concede this format war some time next week after all they haven't been viable for the last year.
But,.. they likely won't admit it's over till Feb perhaps. I think they hope to clear out lots of hardware inventory by practically giving them away. A Walmart Secret sale will have yet another fire sale of the HD DUD players on Dec 7. They don't want to have to pay to recycle this crap so efforts will be made to hand it off to end users. HD DUD supporters have been told Toshiba wants (or needs) to sell 1 million players by the new year. So while Toshiba is washing their hands of this crap, the HD DUD faithful think they are "growing the install base". If they hadn't bribed Paramount it would have been over by now. -Brian Last edited by bhampton; 12-03-2007 at 09:39 PM. |
