Love the teaser. Yes, it looks familiar to Arrival, but the music sounds like the score from the latter.

"Where the laws of nature don't apply"? Oh hell yeah. This looks and sounds absolutely mind-melting. And Natalie Portman too

Saw the teaser last week, bought the trilogy on the week-end and will begin reading tonight...I prefer reading before seeing the movie where the movie is an adaptation of a novel. This will be my first VanderMeer book, if I enjoy it I'll add Borne to my list but want to read Lagercrantz' first Lisbeth Salander book next after I complete the Southern Reach trilogy; absolutely loved Larsson's Millennium trilogy.

Well this looks interesting and fresh. Not something we see often from Hollywood these days.

I have great faith in Alex Garland. 28 Days was brilliant, as was Ex Machina and Dredd.

Natalie Portman+Alex Garland=my bum in the cinema seat.

Although it's based on a book, I can't help shake the feeling the writer got the idea from Michael Marshall Smith's 'Spares' novel, which has a similar idea of a zone (called the gap) where normal rules don't apply. And he probably read Roadside Picnic as well.

I've made it up to around page 30 or so already, I'm enjoying the way it's written. I did take a peek at what page book 2 starts on, it's page 127! lol, this will be a quick read!

The premise is also reminiscent both of Gareth Edward's Monsters and Tarkovsky's Stalker.

Default Annihilation

Quote:
netflix, paramount to stream internationally natalie portman-starrer ‘annihilation’ 17 days after u.s. Release

exclusive: Netflix and paramount/skydance are negotiating a deal on the alex garland-directed annihilation that will give the streaming service international rights to the sci-fi thriller, and an opportunity to release the film on its overseas streaming service 17 days after the film premieres in the the u.s. On february 23. Paramount will do the traditional theatrical release in the u.s., canada and china.

Putting a major film on netflix internationally three weekends after its release is as groundbreaking as a similar deal netflix made with new line on the next installment of shaft.
[...]

annihilation will be the next film to test that model. Aside from covering a majority of the film’s budget, the feeling was that a specialized movie like this realizes the bulk of its theatrical gross domestically. A close cousin would be garland’s ex machina, which grossed $25.4 million domestically and $11.4 million internationally, this with a rotten tomatoes score of 94%. Annihilation will potentially be seen by a much larger audience overseas as a fresh netflix film with far less spending on p&a, was the rational behind this. I expect it to become more common as netflix is hungry to feed its global audience and films like this prove a challenge to market in overseas theaters.
