Not really sure why Lionsgate is just sitting on this, when it has the potential to be their next big franchise. Maybe they know it's a dud and are waiting to quietly release it in January.

It is still listed for 2022 and all the talent even state so.

I think the reason for this and Clerks III's bizarre release strategy was likely because Moonfall (which they distributed) was a massive flop.. the only other wide release film that they're heavily advertising outside of Massive Talent for the rest of the year is that movie from a cinematic universe that they're inexplicably trying to build based off the movie Wonder (set in the HOLOCAUST!?!? )

There's probably a really good chance that its terrible. Maybe the studio is trying to sell it to a streamer? but nobody is interested in buying right now since all the streamers are trying to cut back costs.

Once they hired Eli Roth as director, I lost faith in it being good. Then the weird cast he hired only made the movie less attractive. It's also being produced by Avi Arad, who thought creating the MCU was a bad idea and has been responsible for some of the worst ideas in Spider-Man movies before Marvel took back creative control the franchise.

They screened footage at CinemaCon and the attendees familiar with the games said it is an accurate adaptation. I’m betting Lionsgate was not expecting the VFX house shortages and backlogs.

The chances of it coming out within the next two months are nonexistent. But December against Avatar 2? Maybe.

There was an AMA on the Borderlands subreddit a few days ago with someone who saw a test screening of it and they basically ripped it to shreds. The post was deleted by the moderators.

Also, this is just a rumor so take it with a grain of salt but: The movie test-screened so badly Lionsgate considered replacing Eli Roth with director Gary Ross. They ultimately stuck with Roth, Gary Ross just did a significant rewrite + wrote new material, the re-shoots took place during Summer 2022 and were directed by Roth. This movie supposedly cost around $70M before re-shoots, which may be due to the fact its production only lasted 2 months.

The fact that it's been shot nearly 2 years ago and we haven't seen any footage yet, is telling.

Holy shit!! If that rumor is true then that’s really sad. I knew Roth was a questionable choice, but I didn’t expect him to turn in a shit movie. Borderlands was always something I saw working with James Gunn better anyway.

Yes I heard about the test screenings so that proved the movie does in fact exist. Now the only question is, will they release it at all? At this point they should. Borderlands is a HUGE franchise for them to just scrap the movie altogether.

At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if Lionsgate are shopping it around to see if they can sell it to one of the streaming services, maybe Amazon or Netflix.

You'd think they would have started some form of marketing by now if they had any confidence in it.
