Oh well, at least you tried. But persistence sometimes pays off, right?

If we had no other projects on the slate, I would actively pursue this but the plate is much too full right now!

It's great that we have more vintage 3D coming but a shame this is looking like it's not going to get an English-friendly and corrected release. You'd think they'd welcome a licensing deal, especially with a promise of region locking.

Did you make your request in Italian?

It's disappointing to know that Bob can't chase it down right now as we know how his persistence can pay off, but it's good to know why!!!!

I will try again when the dust settles. We’re about to launch a HUGE non-3-D Kickstarter campaign on Friday, May 21 so all of my time and effort is going into that endeavor.

Do not despair my stereo compadres, there’s a primo Golden Age 3-D campaign just waiting in the wings and that will go live once we’re a little further along with finishing up Shogun Women!

Guessing the non-3D is Abbott and Costello's "Captain Kidd" and the Golden age 3D is "The Diamond Wizard". Just speculation...........

Hi, everyone!

At long last, there are English subtitle files available for The Funniest Show On Earth.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1H8i...ew?usp=sharing

You will please excuse any rough edges you find. The Italian SDH-format subs were ripped from the Blu-ray disc and run through Google Translate. The results were then put through a polish to clean up punctuation and clarify "wonky" translations. The results are undoubtedly imperfect, but no further improvements can be expected at this time.

The subtitles are all placed at the same plane on the z-axis. The software employed assigns all subs the same pre-selected rho value*. In other words, it's not possible using the present software to place individual subtitles at specific points along the z-axis. Furthermore, the negative parallax in these subs is "maxed out," as far forward as the software would allow. There will undoubtedly be some visual conflict with any subject matter that comes forward of the screen plane-- but I did my best with the resources I had.

Please note that when I play the subs against my ripped SBS version of the film in VLC, only a 25 fps export maintains proper sync throughout. Therefore, the attached files are all 25 fps.

I have provided these subs in several file formats. I think the .idx and .sub files will work with ripped SBS versions of the film. (These work fine on my machine.) I think the .sup file is meant to be used with .ISO files, but I must leave it to you to figure out how to make that work. The .srt file is strictly for 2-D use, or you may convert it into 3-D subs using the software of your choosing.

If you have any complaints, please keep in mind that these were prepared free of charge by a non-translator in his spare time, working strictly as a hobbyist. If we ever happen to see an official English-language release, I hope the licensor will approach a certain company I can recommend to provide professional, high-quality subtitles for a fair price.

* A measure of negative parallax proposed by Armin J. Hill and the Motion Picture Research Council in the 1950s.

Mike, if I had the software/hardware needed and even the slightest concept of how to put the original disc and your work together, I'd get both in a second! Guess now I'll just wait and hope some company will put it all in one commercially. If that doesn't happen soon, I'll just buy the disc and start taking Italian lessons.(LOL)

Mike, thanks so much for doing this.

Initially when I heard this movie was not English friendly I was hesitant to buy it.

Of course, as it's 50s 3D, I had to buy it.

Really looking forward to it now.

Phil.

Now I'm thinking about buying the 3D Blu-ray and finding myself an Italian speaking girlfriend!

Thanks so much Mike.

I have purchased the 3-D Blu-ray but am unsure how to add the subtitles file... I can create an ISO easily enough (I think) but where to from there?

Anyone care to offer a guide or some pointers please?

I hope someone will share info with both of us about that. I really only know enough to be dangerous, as the saying goes. I learned a few years ago how to make SBS files for personal use, and I also know how to make copies of an .ISO, but anything beyond that is all another "voyage of discovery." As I've mentioned, my subtitles pair well with my SBS file in VLC.

I'm glad to hear that the subs have worked out okay. If it turns out a 24 fps variant is more helpful to someone out there, I could provide one. Beyond that, I'm at the limits of my knowledge and my available time.

Well I certainly appreciate the effort you've put into this Mike - and thank you for giving it a go in the first place. I'm sure there will be a pat-on-the-back from Bob, although I bet he'd much rather get this licensed for the 3DFA to fix up and release properly.

I use an LG BP60NB10 external player and MakeMKV to rip the disc to my computer. MKVtoolnix to edit the MKV file and a Zidoo Z9X to playback the 3D MKV file with an external SRT subtitle, which also allows me to universally change subtitle depth. I found burning custom BD-R discs too troublesome with 3D and subtitles. HDM_fan wrote a great guide for the process here.

After I get this, I'm going to view the translated subtitles and create my own dub track.
