Wow, really cool info, thanks. That makes sense now.

So Avatar 2 is 2020
Avatar 3 2021

Avatar 4 2024
Avatar 5 2025

I'm hoping 2021 we have glasses free 3DTV by then that can handle strong 3D pop outs and layering as with our current glasses tech, possibly inspired by Avatar 2. And with plenty of angles to view it at so it doesn't get general grief for "but I can only view it directly facing the screen".

What do you mean still nothing. They're literally shooting the sequels right now.

Why come on here if you feel that way? Surely it would be best to ignore the thread?

I just find it odd when it’s a film series you have lost interest in. Not just you but anyone doing the same.

So you want to start a discussion about a film you don't care about with others who don't care ? That should make for a thrilling read !

Well, the ship hasn't sailed, I don't think that's up for opinion. Everyone involved in the production must be pretty confident in the films being produced as being huge successes at this point, based on the time, money, and multiple films.

The Abyss and True Lies.
Sorry, but it's a legal requirement to mention these two anytime there's a James Cameron thread.

Yeah native 3D is obviously the best when uses right but conversions have gotten so good that they offer stronger 3D than a lot of native shoots.

Unusual that James Cameron's saying he's collaborating from the people at Dolby Cinema. I thought they didn't have any 3D screens so appears great news that Avatar 2 will cause Dolby to use their laser projectors with 3D and hopefully a resurgence of 3D.

It really is all about the brightness and reduction of cross talk for a good experience. IMAX just closed Cineworld on a load of new IMAX Lasers too. It's a great sign for 3D.

10 years is a while to wait - and some recent 3D I've seen has surpassed the original. But I cannot wait to see what he has in store for a 3D and HDR experience at the theatre

Fingers crossed that Avatar will bring about renewed enthusiasm for the 3D format but even though it's kind of become the norm for big movies to be in 3D, it still doesn't solve the problem at home with no more new 3D TV's. I really hope Avatar 2 and so on do gangbusters at the box office so manufacturers start including the tech in their new sets again.

At least those are out on blu ray! Unlike The Abyss and True Lies.

I hope I don't have my expectations set to high. Possibly glasses free 3D...maybe 8K screens...maybe high contrasts. Think I'm way more interested in the technology we may see than in the movie itself. Although I...expect that to be awesome as well.

But...are theaters going to be willing to spend the $$$$ to bring it to us full throttle. And I think I have given up on the glasses free idea,...

More likely than not, I think most of us will end up seeing it on the same screens and technology we've been seeing other 3D films. I don't see a huge appetite for expensive upgrades. Although perhaps, eventually. Maybe by the third or fourth one there'll be something.

If I can see a movie as compelling as the original with strong native 3D photography that'll be enough for me. My issue all along has been quality of the content, not the technology. The lack of good native stereography bothers me far more than any display shortcomings.
