I got this today via Amazon, to me it was a waste of money, most of the scenes are shown in a small letterbox in the middle of the screen until you get to space station shots and shuttle shots and any rendered scenes. Plus it is only 45 minutes long.

I had a bad feeling about this with that price point. Went for the standard blu, thanks for the info.

well it IS an IMAX documentary feature, which generally are less than 50 minutes. My main beef with this release is the lack of supplement material, generally most of these IMAX home video releases have really good selection of featurettes, a few have commentary tracks, etc., but for the price ... yeah, nah... decided to cancel my Amazon preorder and just wait for the price to drop further.

Quite underwhelmed by this.
There's not a whole lot of "IMAX" footage. A big portion of the documentary is in a small window box with animated frames and background. Why didn't they just fill up the frame with black pillar box is beyond me.

Quite disappointed with this and I don't really recommend it.

I am surprised that anyone would buy crap like this that you can watch for free on TV. Do people actually go to the movies to watch crap like this?

believe it - yes, IMAX features that utilize 16mm, video shot footage that isn't of high resolution or will be diminished of quality blown up to 4:3 will only use a portion of the screen - it's up to the director how this will be integrated onto the screen - most of the scenes in this are full screen, so it's not like it's a bust that only a few scenes are seen as such - on a big IMAX and/or large format screen, it doesn't matter, on monitors it looks odd.

I collect a lot of IMAX 3D and BD releases. It could well possibly the last time some of these titles ever get released on home media (some never made it past laserdisc/dvd). I have a cable sub and have yet to see an IMAX doc on it; and even if it did, they wouldnt be in 4K/high bitrate 1080P with uncompressed sound. Some of the out of print IMAX docs fetch a decent amount 2nd hand. Generally they have good cinematography and are interesting with some decent celebrity voiceovers. Whats not to like?

That and the 15/70 footage from most of them is absolutely stunning.

Well, I loved it. I dunno quite where you're getting this "big portion" bit from because maybe a quarter of it is windowboxed, mostly for the footage of the last flight of the Shuttle near the beginning. The rest is lifted from existing IMAX 15/70 space documentaries or is proper 4K captured modern footage.

I didn't get a massive amount of height information from the Atmos track, it's mostly the background music that benefits, but there's some lovely bass whenever the shuttles take off.

Oh, and see how the back of the case (and even the disc art itself) sez that the included 2D/3D disc is Region A locked? It's not, it played fine on my Region B Panny UB900! And I double checked it with a proper A locked disc that showed the usual 'region mismatch' screen, so this disc is definitely B compatible at the least.

anybody ever check out Journey to Space HDR and compare to the sdr version to the HDR version?

i had a chance to, and while the regular 4k version looks good, the HDR version has a more magical look with extra punchy colors and more pop/depth to the image as well as some better black levels at times too. its really a major difference that might not be fully appreciated unless you have 2 displays side by side playing each version.

click the spoiler to see some quick pix, and remember that even though some areas in the HDR may look dark, the details are visible in person.

SDR version posted 1st

also, beware there is close to 20 pictures :P

How were those images captured? Did you lock in the settings before or was the camera on auto? Those HDR images look terribly oversaturated and burnt.

Its impossible to capture the colors properly. It's just for fun. The colors are incredibly rich which yes becomes too much for the camera (galaxy s6)

I understand the problems of displaying 'future-tech' on current displays. I was just wondering if those images/camera was calibrated or just snapped. No worries!

For anyone that is near a Fry's Electronics, they have this title on sale (with Promo Code) for $25.99 which is much better than the $30 every place else.
