Will give you my honest verdict once I have mine Mike. Heck, if you where nearby you could even come round for a brew and have a look yourself, no problems

Whether Panasonic’s forthcoming player will be remains to be seen, as no release date has been issued yet, and Panasonic will neither confirm nor deny compatibility. However, Dolby did point out to Digital Trends that Panasonic was the first to announce plans to produce a Dolby Vision-enabled player.

Until it ever becomes mandatory on discs there is no reason to include it.
It's just another HDR format and it's far from on all discs

Since there are no DV compatible TVs for sale yet, the answer is no. Unfortunately, you won't be able to support HDR at all since it sounds like you don't have HDMI 2.0a / HDCP 2.2 ports (or you wouldn't have asked).

My TV has a HDCP 2.2 port but I think it's HDMI 2.0 only. It's a november 2014 LG UHD TV

I'm going to wait for the Panasonic player because the Samsung may be like their other players, as in no discrete IR codes for power and no way to defeat their NR as applied to the video.

I do hope the Panasonic is a certified DLNA player and has a much better portable app than they currently have. If not any better, then I may wait and see what LG and/or Oppo offers up.

Confirmation of an April release, and some info on the player.

The DMP-UB900 is also designed to deliver the highest-quality audio. Dual HDMI connection separates audio and video signals, in order to suppress unwanted noise. Analog 7.1-channel audio can be output directly to a home theater system. Connectors are gold-plated.

Inside, the DMP-UB900 uses large-capacity electrolytic capacitors, for stable power, and a Mica capacitor to reduce internal digital noise from the power line. A LAN Common Mode Filter blocks noise from external devices during network playback. The DAC supports high-resolution 192KHz/32-bit audio, with support for recording formats such as DSD and ALAC, in addition to the standard WAV, FLAC, MP3, AAC and WMA formats.

According to Panasonic, the DMP-UB900 Ultra HD 4K Blu-ray Player will be launching "later this year," with Canadian pricing and availability to be announced.

Indeedy, I said as much in an older thread. If it comes to the UK at that price with no lower-priced competitor then UHD Blu will have even more of a hill to climb, not that the studios probably had high hopes for it outside of US/Japan anyway. Perhaps that's the method behind the apparent "region free" nature of the discs: even when we finally get the hardware outside of the US/Japan maybe we won't get many localised discs, so we'll actually be encouraged to import?

[edit] Still, I was right about the US prices in that old thread though, coming in at $500 (retail) always made sense to me.

Just can't let this one go, especially when I see others bite on it.
NON-HDR displays will not see any additional benefit from HDR material; it will look the same as any other NON-HDR material.
That doesn't mean the movie may not be mastered well or look good, but it won't be because of HDR.

That was my understanding. If they cant do HDR10, it would be "ignored", but doesn't mean you won't get PQ benefits.

Kinda like DCIP3, if you display's CMS can't expand, will do you no good.

I bought the BDP-S1 for a grand back in the day. I promptly returned to buy both a Xbox 360 & PS3 for same price. That was in 2005 or 2006, so with inflation its not as absurd as Sony's first blu-ray player. As ive said here before, im not buying 100 blu-rays again, when i watch once, then see again one more time the following year. I want either a PS4 upgrade or a player i can play the few titles ill buy again, new ones i buy, but most important is video store where i can rent or buy digital copies from each studio- this is why an updated PS4 is badly needed.
