When you get around the Blu's, I highly recommend the 3-hour documentary that's part of the special features for the first movie. I watched it just yesterday and it was probably funnier than the movies are at this point since I've seen them so many times.

Saw the original film on the big screen last night. I figured maybe it would be remastered in prep for an upcoming UHD release, but nope, it was some manky old DVD-era master of the R-rated cut.

Film was a lot of fun, though! I hadn't seen it since I was a kid and I wasn't even certain if I'd watched it in its entirety, but I realised I actually remembered a lot of the story beats. Makes me wanna watch the sequels (I think I've maybe seen the second one but not Wedding nor Reunion).

Didn't 88 Films tease AP last year?

I've always enjoyed the second film more than the first, although both are great. Wedding has a few moments but loses half the cast, and is probably the worst of the four IMO. Reunion is ok, sitting somewhere between Wedding and the other two.

I completely forgot 88 Films had teased it! You've just saved me some dollar. I was this close to importing the 4-film set.

Don't suppose you've seen any of the American Pie Presents films? Any diamonds in the rough?

The existing Universal Blu-rays of the American Pie films look awful, would hope 88 Films use new updated 4K masters.

No

Jim's Dad is in one (Book of Love) and Sherman's in one of them (briefly), but from memory those are the only cast crossovers, and generally they're all poor IMO.

The Presents films are decent enough but not close to the quality of the main 4 movies. I imported the Blu Rays for the Presents ones to upgrade my DVDs. The first one, Band Camp is the best IMO, and closest to the quality of the theatrical releases. It helps that the actor they cast as Matt Stifler does a great job at aping Seann William Scott.

Jim's Dad is in all of the official spin offs except the 5th one, Girls Rules.

Lots of edge enhancement, it’s worth checking Park Circus or Reddit/Twitter for mentions of 4K DCPs or remasters, because most of the time it’ll be an older master, like all the Disney DCPs dating to 2009 or so, and won’t be unrated/extended cuts unless it explicitly says. The differences are marginal so I was fine watching the R rated cut, but with Anchorman next week I’ll be fine skipping it (of course Blade Runner is listed as Final Cut.)

Quite a raucous audience, seemed to be quite a few teenagers as well.

Don’t think I’ll be checking out any of the sequels/spin offs except maybe the second one, even though sex comedies will always have some relevance, I don’t really see the point as much once you take it out of the high school/losing virginity setting.

With all the poop and piss gags and awkward intrusions it’s almost body horror. It feels like such a 90s time capsule with its soundtrack, carrying a memory of John Hughes teen comedies with Don’t You (Forget About Me) playing at prom and Mrs Robinson evoking The Graduate with a MILF with a preference for 18 year old graduates and her pose, but following on from other Universal teen comedies about alcohol, school and struggling to get with girls while trying too hard, like Dazed and Confused. Its vocabulary of sex is different to two and a half decades later, racing to your friends’ house to watch an illicitly recorded low pixel webcam of a naked exchange student leaked through email CCs (similar to how sexts get leaked across schools nowadays), being given porn magazines by your oversharing and overenthusiastic dad welcoming in your masturbation and sex journey, hijacking a signal to access the porn channels, sharing sex knowledge in a hidden book behind a compartment in the library, and dating sites with 0 replies and a webcam picture. Even by the 2000s this had changed with porn becoming easily accessible in higher resolutions online without having to worry about dialup, but it’s also very much a 70s/80s porno setup but toned down from hardcore for an accessible wide audience.

While understandable for a late 90s teen comedy, I do find it weird how open the film is with showing breasts and talking about pussies, but it shies away from even showing guys’ butts, puts a sock over it and the closest the film goes with making guys erotic is showing them in the locker room, with the odd reference to being well hung or a tainted beer.

This year would make sense for a remaster given it’s an anniversary and Universal have released other teen comedies like Animal House in 4K.

I watched the first three in school, and at that time, I liked them because they fit the environment. But 'Wedding' was already on the edge. After that, I didn't even keep track of how many of them were released.
