for the record - "Snow White and the Huntsman" (extended cut) is Dolby Vision graded via VUDU as well.

I just wish one of the studios would confirm they intend to release a DV version on UHD Blu ray and give some kind of time scale.

With tech advancements like DV and Dolby Atmos or DTS: X, the studios almost never market those attributes. That's why the audio logos are so small on the covers.

They sell their products by the titles and hope that's enough. They let Dolby or DTS sell the tech.

A shortsighted decision, but... there you go.

And after the Oppo (hopefully) releases a firmware update to support Dolby Vision. It does look likely that it will be the first to support Dolby Vision.

As far as I understand it DV requires a chip and can't be added via firmware.

Correct. However, sometimes a player may already include the chip but may need a firmware update to support DV. If the chip is not there, then it can't do DV.

Ok so let me get this straight. The Vudu UHD masters are different then the UHD bluray masters because the bluray uses HDR10 and Vudu uses Dolby Vision, correct?

So would that mean that titles that have UHD versions on Vudu but don't have UHD blurays (Nice Guys, Lights Out, etc.) may get a Dolby Vision disc once they available in 2017 since Dolby has already done a UHD master?

What I'm getting at it and trying to figure out, is why are their Vudu exclusive UHD movies. If Warner does HDR10 passes in house and Vudu pays Dolby to do DV passes then this makes sense. Warner didn't want to be bothered to run HDR passes on Lights Out, Nice Guys, etc. (maybe didn't think they would sell well or have a timed exclusive deal) so they licensed out those movies to Vudu. Vudu then pays Dolby to run a DV pass. And in the end Vudu gets an exclusive title.

This would make sense if Warner does the HDR10 stuff in house for the UHD blurays and doesn't make the Dolby Vision masters for Vudu. Because I was always confused as to why Warner would do digital only titles since I feel you will still make more money from UHD discs than digital purchases. Tons of articles say digital purchases are still behind physical sales, and that it is streaming that is eating into physical medi sales, not digital purchases.

So long story short, Warner didn't want to do HDR10 masters for those titles. I'm holding out hope that they eventually arrive on UHD, when the DV discs come out, since they have DV masters

It's a catalogue thing, just as every movie given an HD transfer isn't available on Blu, every movie given a HDR UHD pass isn't going to be instantly released on UHD Blu. If a DV version is exclusive to certain streaming vendors then they've probably paid for that exclusivity but the DV master was still done by the studio, as I don't believe that studios who've already paid to licence Dolby's HDR grading tech for home video (Sony, Lionsgate, Warners) would piss that money away.

I hope so, cause I'm kinda pissed that Nice Guys and Lights Out is only on UHD for Vudu and not bluray.

It's just how the game works, the studios aren't going to release every single new movie they make on UHD disc even if it got a UHD finish, as consumable media has a life beyond that of optical disc and on platforms which are much less expensive to disseminate than physical discs (broadcast, streaming etc).

You do know that every Warner Bros dolby vision title on vudu has a hdr10 pyshical releaase (example madmax is hdr 10 blue Ray uhd but dobly vision on vudu digital).
Only the the digit also uhd gets DV.

This isn't true. There's plenty of Dolby Vision movies on vudu that aren't on 4k disc, such as the Hangover trilogy.

I was wondering that two since both "Oblivion" and "Warcraft" DV versions are superior to what Universal threw on the UHD disc editions

That's not what Dolby said. The first half of 2017 will see DV disc releases with players to follow in the second half.
