A while back we did that to Shout Factory for "Bwana Devil" and it's seemed to work so far.

While we vintage 3d fans are loud and vocal, unfortunately we are a small minority to the big movie boys and seem to have little effect. But to the old vintage 3d movies which have little interest to the general public, we ARE the majority.

I am not familiar with this title but support ANY 3D release. I sent a letter myself and if so receive a response I will let you know!

This is a guilty pleasure movie. I'm almost ashamed to admit I like it. It was the first 3-D Sci Fi film in the 80's. I remember seeing Star Wars the first time and thinking how great it would look in 3-D and this one was pretty impressive for it's time. I would buy this in a heartbeat but only in it's 3-D Version. If the 3-D Archive worked on mastering it I'm sure it would be spectacular.

I've seen a bootleg 3D version of the old Japanese VHD. The movie is pretty terrible except for the sci-fi art style and hand-crafted special effects. The 3D is typical vintage strong with several fun, gimmicky pop-outs and would look fantastic restored in HD with its original aspect ratio. It wouldn't even be worth watching in 2D to me.

Just checked it out. "Spacehunter" was preceded almost 2 years in 1981 by "Comin' At Ya".

TV Spot for the 3D trailer (in 2D). This looks like a fun sci fi B movie, with Michael Ironside as the main villain from what I read. Too bad to hear the license was wasted on a company that doesn't care about 3D from the sound of it.

By the way, the older release of the DVD is only $5 on amazon.com as an add on item with Krull double feature.

IIRC back in the day this movie was in heavy rotation on HBO (presumably when they weren't showing Beastmaster 24/7), so I've never even seen the 3d version. I would have been happy to buy the 3d Blu version, but I'm content to get the standard for now at $9. Sorry for all of you who think boycotting the cheapskates at Mill Creek is going to be effective at all. It might not be pan & scan, black & white or sitting in the producer's lap as they intended it to be viewed, but at this price its worth the nostalgia for me. Have fun stormin' the castle though. Of course, if it were a $20 title I'd be singing your tune too.

Having purchased this cheapo release, would you be prepared to subsequently purchase a 3D release should one materialize?

I can understand your nostalgic desire to see the film regardless of how it is released, but don't appreciate your sarcasm.

OK movie with 3D. Waste of time in 2D.

I recall watching this as a child on HBO in the 80's. I bought the double feature DVD with Krull a few years ago. Spacehunter didn't age well for me. No interest in watching it again unless it was in decent 3D quality on blu-ray.

Not sure if it'll help, but I emailed Mill Creek at support@millcreekent.com and requested that they release Spacehunter 3-D in a proper 3-D version, and that I wouldn't consider purchasing a 2D version but would pay a premium for 3-D. I really would love to see this film in 3D!!

I have to watch it again, though I also now have the 2D double pack ($5 DVD) of the classic Krull and this movie, Spacehunter Forbidden Zone. This movie is interesting, but the pacing is fairly slow and a lot of it includes banter/dialog between Molly Ringwald and the main hero. Not quite the adventure I was hoping for.
Michael Ironside as the main cyborg like villain plays an interesting role. I have to watch this again, but aside from a few probable pop out shots, there seems to be quite a few shots that don't necessarily take advantage of framing for 3D.

That said, this was filmed in 3D so I definitely would welcome a 3D version if that ever happens. I agree that Millcreek will be tough to convince to release a 3D version considering they're a budget minded distributor/label and already have all the 2D plans underway.

I guess most people don't care if it is in 3D. It's #25 on the Amazon best seller list for Sci Fi Blu-ray's. Only $8.99 at Amazon.

Thanks for the info. I see a lot of 1/5 stars posted by members for "No 3D" on there.

Review is wrong.

"This version does feel cramped in some shots; composition feels cluttered and action and characters occasionally have no room to breathe."

It was opened up (compared to 2.35 3D) for the Blu-ray.

Original film frame:

Blu-ray:

It was cropped even more for 2.35 in 3D.

Except we're not most people. Niche minority is how we're seen.

... So either the film isn't popular enough to justify a 3-D restoration, and we're supposed to be grateful it even gets a 2d release, or else it sells well enough that they don't need 3D?

Can't win with that logic.

My view is they should release films correctly. It was pretty clear all along that no one would've gone broke releasing this in 3-D.
