People need to read the fine print - Shout! is scanning the movie from 35mm elements and not a 35mm print of the entire film.
There's so much cloudiness when it comes to this movie that a lot of people have confused the fact that the original film was lost in the 80's. The original aspect ratio'd film from 1986 hasn't been seen since 1986. All that has existed for Transformers has been the 4:3 cropped ratio that the vhs home release had, and all Sony did was crop that 4:3 ratio crop into a new widescreen ratio. So yea, seeing this movie in widescreen is even farther away from how it was intended to be seen in the 80's since the movie was lost back then |

I'm presenting an actual opinion that I've learned to be fact. If you wanna convince me I'm wrong, say something - I'm open to debate. But you're just trolling and calling me nuts. How does that disprove anything I'm saying?

No one ever scans from a release print unless original elements are lost. Original elements - something specifically called out by SF in their press release - is what the vast majority (as in 99% of new scans) are sourced from. The term "original elements" typically refers to the 35mm negative or answer print.
While it's true that Sony's 2006 release was likely zoomed in - something quite common for home video releases for matted widescreen films until just the last 5-6 years - that's no reason whatseover to suggest that going back to the original 35mm elements like Shout is doing won't yield the correctly matted, non-zoomed 1.85:1 theatrical image. Indeed, that would be one of the main points for doing a new scan in HD of the original 35mm film elements. But one should still expect a lot of the top and bottom of the animation seen in the 1.33:1 to be missing, i.e. matted over. That's what is done for non-anamorphic widescreen films since 1954. Years ago I had read that the original film was lost, but then re-found at some college or academic institute sometime in the mid 2000's. But with further inspection, the idea was still that the original film from the 80's was lost and that this new rediscovery was at least a closer (as close to) ratio that it originally played at in theaters.
If Shout! has that film, or a copy of it, they could certainly recreate the original OAR without sacrificing too much. But because the original film has been lost, there just will never be an authentic recreation of the film as it was shown in the 80's. And I'm not trying to nitpick, cuz a matter of millimeters missing from the sides of an image won't distract me. But Sony did a bad crop job with their 20th anniversary release, and I hope Shout! won't create a similar false widescreen for the sake of aspect ratio because fans think the image hasn't been tampered with beforehand already. |

While there is no substitute for the negative in terms of quality, an IP is still an archival pre-print element at least two generations better off than any theatrical print, and you can also see the word 'flat' on the film cans which denotes that this may also include any of the 'full frame' information that was contained on the negative. What Shout will do with that information is tough to say for sure, but one would assume that a matted 1.78 transfer is in the offing to preserve the original theatrical intent. (Yes, I know it should technically be 1.85 but Shout are like Warners: they just don't do 1.85, man.) |
