Harmony Gold produced a compilation movie for TV based on the first four episodes, but prior to that, Ziv also dubbed several other episodes into English. Altogether I recall about 10 episodes' worth of material getting a dub, with possibly a few more completed. I don't know what the licensing situation is with the property though, being based on US books. I suspect this may be why the series never made it to DVD, although I was surprised to finally see that it received a Blu-ray release. |

This thread makes me sad. So much that I want and will likely never see, from The Golden Age of 70's-90's animation.

Yes, Nozomi Entertainment will be releasing it. They said it'll be released in 2020, but take that with a grain of salt, sometimes they take some time to release their stuff.

I'm an old school anime (and even more so, old school manga--but obviously they're connected) fan. I got into anime as a young teen in the early 90s and even then was more interested in the obscure older fansubs. Especially when it comes to series--
Particularly love classic shoujo--which there isn't a lot of really--even 90s titles (has Fushigi Yuugi ever gotten a BluRay release? I was shocked enough when it became a fan hit here). We dohave Glass Mask (has that been listed?) and I admit that's NOT a shoujo I love (at least the anime--the endless manga seems more appealing, but I'm glad to have it. But no Rose of Versaille? One of the rare classic shoujo titles the fan community always seems to know (and I assume the DVDs that were released here did well--and of course we're now finally getting the manga). The first half is good, but it's really the wonderfully second half, by my fave TV anime director of that eria, Osamu Dezaki (who invented the "postcard" end scene I've been told) where it becomes spectacular. Dezaki of course returned later, for NHK noless, to do another Riyoko Ikeda manga adaptation, the wonderfully melodramatic Oniisama E (I remember the fansubs called it Brother Dear Brother). There was a VERY limited fan funded DVD release of that series here, that became impossible to find by the time I was aware of it, but it's top notch stuff (as long as you can handle that much melodrama). Not remotely shoujo, but I'd love to see some of the shonen series that made Dezaki a star--Ashita no Jo (for which he did several different remakes and films, etc) DEzaki did do two movies mentioned here, Golgo 13 and Space Adventure Cobra and I admit I love their genre throwback elements (even sleaze)and while not remotely shoujo, they still show many of the elements of his shoujo shows in how they are directed. And I know it's just been mentioned here, but with all the Miyazaki love is no one trying to pick up Future Boy Conan? It's tons of fun and not too long--and really holds up (better Ithink than the similar Nadia from Gainax, although I am very glad to have that). Probably less interest at least from the anime community, and still eternally popular in Japan, are the World Masterpiece Theatre series Takahata (often with Miyazaki) made a lot of their reputation on--Heidi and Anne of Green Gables in particular (I grew up loving the French dub of Anne). I could go on, and on... |

And two early animes scored by Joe Hisaishi. Robot Carnival, which anyone who grew up interested in anime in N America in the 1990s knows. And Arion from 1985 (so just after Nausicaa, and the score shares a lot with it) which has beautiful animation--you can check it out on Youtube. It's based on a Greekmythology themed manga by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, who also directed and designed the anime and... was the character designer of the first Gundam and, adding to this thread, also directed and wrote two movies mentioned already--Venus Wars and Crusher Joe.

Most of those are SD-BDs, as in standard definition video encodes in MPEG-4 AVC 480p (or 480i in some cases) with the benefits of AVC compression, higher bitrates than DVD and better subtitles. |
