You must also remember that:
1: 35mm has a higher dynamic range than SDR. 2: HDR is also being used as a blanket term for HDR and WCG. Honestly, the scale of the benefits of WCG are similar to the scale to the benefits of HDR. Now if the reviews say Warner turns up the HDR on this, I'll be avoiding this one. I'm waiting for this one as this is warner's first non-DI catalogue, and Warner has been not been that great when it comes to 4K Blu-Ray. But to judge it before it comes out is what bothers me. Honestly, this could potentially be the most faithful release of this movie If done right. I'm not saying Warner will not use HDR as a means of revisionism, I'm saying HDR does not mean revisionism. |

Again I know film has more Dynamic range but "HDR" is something new. Studios need something new to peddle so introduce HDR. I also know film has a higher resolution. I'm not arguing that. Do you get upset when people prefer a disc to have the original audio? I for one prefer to listen in the original format. Take Screams The Thing disc that comes out on the 11th. We are finally getting the orgiginal 4.0 soundtrack that was released theatrically. If you prefer to watch your movies altered that's fine. I don't and that's why I'm not buying. I thought these forums are for people to voice their opinion.

Will wait to get the UHD BD of GoodFellas, until it gets to at least half price or a few years have passed.
Even if it is one my Top Ten favourite films, I can't justify quintuple dipping (VHS-DVD-BD-Remaster BD-UHD BD), not at this point in time, considering I only got the 4K scan remaster in May last year. ![]() |

Since it's graded in HDR10, they are adjusting for the wider dynamics and gamut of that feature.

HDR10 is after all from Dolby so it's the same as Dolby Vision with the difference that it is not dynamic HDR. Dynamic HDR will tone map the HDR metadata down to the capabilities of the display, but if the display is already capable (meaning it can meet or exceed the specs in the metadata) then no tone mapping is necessary. I wouldn't count on these catalog movies (or any other UHD movies) getting reissued with Dolby Vision. Besides, it might not be Dolby Vision but rather HDR10 dynamic that becomes the norm on disc. |
