For anyone still thinking about buying Koch's blu-ray edition... don't!
The encode is as bad as the UK one, with horrendous banding in the same two sequences of the film: when Jesse and Dean go to the hills at night, and when Jesse and Ruby are in the bedroom at the mansion. Koch's image is also unnecessarily darker and consequently loses some shadow detail. The only redeeming aspect is the inclusion of a few extras, namely the interviews with NWR and Cliff Martinez. Not even the nice pink case exists anymore, it seems (it came on a regular one). In other words, I'm returning it and keeping my Icon copy. Koch's 4K however, unlike its blu-ray counterpart, is a thing of beauty in terms of encode. Despite being SDR-only, it's gorgeous and definitely the best edition out there. Sadly, it's out of print. Lastly, there's no "unrated" cut in any home edition, as far as I know. I believe that's what I saw in cinemas at the time - in Europe they usually show the unrated versions - though I may be misremembering. Either way, all physical media editions appear to have the same cut, i.e. what IMDb describes as the R-Rated cut. Last edited by DyingSun; 05-29-2025 at 09:11 PM. |
