So the Collector's Edition will only have a 4K BD Disc and not a standard BD Disc? So no combo pack?

Will get both the Collector's edition and Special Edition only if they have different artwork, which I'm assuming they will....

I love that they're doing Digipaks! I love digipaks!!!

I really wanna watch that music commentary... Hope someone ends up adding subtitles to it cause the music and songs are def one of the best things in this movie.

Now to wait for the official announcement. My guess is end of May.

Given how angry he is at the final product, I'm not surprised. He'll probably say something like "In this scene, I wanted to explore the sexuality more, but the studio insisted that we shouldn't"

I'll say this, I'm surprised that no addition comes with the woven string. Maybe Funimation will have an edition like that.

Or he'll tell us to turn the blu-ray off, because he doesn't want us to watch the film.

That type of statement doesn't happen; "studios" do not control what the director does with a production. That's why they're the "director"; their vision supersedes other's. The SAO movie had a booklet with a roundtable with its director and two producers given out a couple weeks ago in JP and its director had things that the producers didn't know about. Studios are given infinitely more credit in the West than they have over most animation production in Japan (exceptions do exist, but that's why they're exceptions; the norm is like this).

Said woven string is already available for order from Toho's online store, but due to an immense amount of orders, it's backlogged for about 4 months.

Wait, the only person who hated the film is the director himself? No wonder I find this film so easy to like.

BTB, can you source me on that fact? The only info I searched is that he didn't want to be compared to Miyazaki and that it's far from perfect.

I saw that! But I'm not sure about the price... It's kind of high.. Heck, its the cost of the Collector's Edition Blu-Ray... Do you know why it's so expensive? Cause I've seen some other strings sold online and they were not that expensive.

I wouldn't say the only one who hated the film, it's not everyone's cup of tea. But as a director, he really shouldn't have been so negative about the movie, especially while it was still being shown in theaters and there was Oscar buzz being thrown around. It just screams unprofessionalism.

I don't have the source of that, but I read it a while ago, how he wasn't happy with the studio because they didn't let him explore the sexuality of the characters more and that they had to rush a few things due to timing issues.

It's official merchandise that's professionally made instead of being made by an amateur. I wouldn't be surprised that the quality of these cords is much higher than you'd expect.

Look at this from Shinkai's point of view. He's worked on this for two years and had a specific visualization in mind for it when working on the script for the film. Due to having to meet a specific deadline for stages (scripts, storyboards, designs, layouts, animation, compositing, etc), the finished product didn't match what he originally wanted for the film. As such, it's not satisfactory for him despite everyone loving it.

Additionally, from a finance point of view, Toho only predicted it would earn 1.5 billion yen at the box office. It made double that in the first ten days. Shinkai is getting nominated and winning mainstream awards around the world. The film becomes the top grossing anime film of all time (internationally). He's being called "the next Miyazaki."

For someone who doesn't seek out fame, that is an immense amount of pressure to be put on yourself. Everyone, from creative staff to the financial investors, will compare every single work from him henceforth to Your Name. If the next film doesn't favorably compare in audience enjoyment or financial standards, he'll be seen very poorly. Shinkai is trying to alter that perception and ground people with his comments; it's not him complaining without reason. That's why he's fine with people not going to see the film anymore. It's not "unprofessional," it's grounding expectations.

I'm sorry Makoto, but I will go see the film.

And then I will import the Japanese Blu-ray

Shinkai isn't my cup of tea, and I really like this film. What I said may be a hyperbole, but the amount of people disliking this film may be pretty small.

Give it a couple of years or a couple of viewings when everyone starts looking past the fantastic visuals

On the one hand, I know you're being sardonic. But you're likely not wrong, giving other popular movies also devolve into retroactive depreciation parades.

It's more that I found the writing itself to be incredibly flat (the movie was still quite enjoyable and I'll be buying it, not every movie has to be Adolescence of Utena and Shawshank or something. Just doesn't need to be "The Bestest Piece Of Cinema Ever Conceived(tm)"- it's a little exhausting). I do genuinely believe that the detractors will come out of the woodworks once the general spectacle wears off. Garden of Words remains his greatest film to me (That said I wasn't a big fan of Children Who Chase Lost Voices or 5cm Per Second anyway, and I don't really remember Place Promised at all, might have to rewatch it).

I hope A Silent Voice reaches even close to the fanfare Your Name has boasted, that film was the achievement I was hoping for from Your Name

Makoto Shinkai did not want a win for Your Name at the Oscars and even mentioned for people to stop seeing it at the theaters. And this is what he was saying back during Christmas time.

I don't agree. The man's getting paid by the movie company. For him to try and undercut the profits by telling people not to go see it is unprofessional, to say the least.

Not sure why the writing is considered flat when the plotting might be the best thing the film has going for it. If you mean the dialogue is flat, that I can't say as it's debatable. But to each his own.

I've heard stellar things about the manga, though I didn't know there was an animated movie existing.

i wouldn't take what shinkai said literally. certainly wouldn't see it as more than a discussion starter. and it's never certain that it does nothing more than stop people going, either. the film continues to be hugely successful. this in itself is something of a sign that there's a lot more nuance to the director, the film and the audience - potential or otherwise - than can be represented in one or more interpretation and reaction to what is being said about it, whether broadly or specifically perceived to be either good or bad.
