interesting to hear that the upscaling wont be done via external chip like the current series, but rather Oppo has created their own upscaling method. Very curious to see how this compares to the 103/105 models. I run my cable through my 103D and upscale to 1080P.

Does that mean it's got a bespoke decoding solution in general? Not all that surprising I guess, seeing as Samsung and Panasonic have used their own SoC for their UHD players (as well as the Philips using a Panny chip). It's more a question of necessity rather than choice, given the lack of off-the-shelf UHD decoding chippery right now. And if they can put everything on one chip as opposed to separate ones for the decoding and scaling then that may be why this is so cheap (well, cheap in OPPO terms).
But I trust OPPO to get it right, as most of the issues I had with my 95 were entirely down to the gammy MediaTek chip. |

Dummy MediaTek chip in my Oppo 83. Shitty drops sound from TrueHD Dolby audio. (itches head) DTS HD Master audio is no problem. I think it's great Oppo hi-if equips hardware. |

We are just explaining some of the possible benefits of Oppo using their own in house chip.

Why?
Just because you don't like Darbee why keep it from those who do? You buy the Oppo without and I buy the Oppo with. See how much nicer that is? . Last edited by JimShaw; 09-19-2016 at 01:28 AM. |

I'm assuming the Darbee version would be around $999. I'd rather add another $500 to my 4K HDTV budget to include additional video calibration and adjustments, as well as saving those adjustments for future movies.
But yeah, to each their own. My BDP-93 crapped out and wouldn't play Blu-ray discs (especially 20th Century Fox discs) (DVDs were just fine) so I'm a little shy of OPPO, but I'd be willing to try them again for the $499 pricetag. |

Darbee added $100 to the 103 series, why would it add $500 to this series? |

I have a question about the HDMI input if people don't mind.
I understand that for those that don't have newer HDMI 2.0a and HDCP 2.2 receivers or SSP's the dual HDMI outputs are beneficial for getting 4k sources without a need to upgrade the receiver because the video can be passed to the tv directly via one of the HDMI outputs while the audio can go to the receiver. If one has a 2nd 4k source can they connect that source (cable/satellite/gaming console/pc) to the Oppo's HDMI input and the Oppo would be able to split that signal into the separate audio and video paths or is that not a capability of the player? If it can I assume the Oppo has to be powered on to do that, it couldn't be in standby? Thanks |

Why are so many people in love with the process when it's really just fancy edge enhancement at the end of the day?

I'm very pleased that OPPO are sticking with similar pricing with the UDP-203. Sure, it won't have all the super-duper features in terms of Darbee, high-end DAC, etc... I'm sure that will all come along with later models - I'm perfectly content with a reasonably-priced OPPO with the same feature-set as the 103, something that I can actually afford
