I would consider Rocketeer to be an overlooked gem well somewhat, but not even close to Blade Runner and such.
Thanks for missing the point, which was that BOTH were considered disappointments upon release only to be found later on video. Blade Runner only made about $27M when it was released, which was about as much as Airplane 2: The Sequel. I wasn't talking about the individual qualities of the films, only that a "flop" at time of release isn't the final arbiter of a film's longevity.

It's considered a true classic nowadays.

But even the Blu-ray release has only:
- Audio commentary, which was surely done ages after making the movie
- 30 minute featurette
- 4 sing-along songs
- tiny featurette
- trailer

Quite a few DVDs of that movie have literally no extras as well. Not even a trailer. The only somewhat okay-ish DVD release was the US Special Edition one.

For a cult movie that's really shitty. But simply understandable. You get tons more for the Burton remake.
Not sure what your point actually is... that even great movies don't always get great special features? Doesn't that explain your gripe?

Demand is simply not there, which means no reason to produce extras, do interviews, etc. All of that costs money. Still quite a few movies, that I really love, haven't even been released on Blu-ray yet. Rocketeer at least GOT a Blu-ray release.
Ummm, you forgot (or likely didn't know) that this is the SECOND steelbook release of The Rocketeer. It already sold out in its first release in 2013 (and at many more copies than Fright Night's 1000) so your comparison is both apples to Volkswagons and not even well researched on your part.

And again... I'm not sure what you're arguing. I understand why The Rocketeer doesn't have any extras, and it has nothing to do with the film's theatrical popularity (which is what you argued). Disney has a horrible track record producing supplements for even their hits. That Rocketeer got not one, but two steelbook releases is all you need to know about the love for that movie.

And that's yet another reason why you're not in charge of picking steelbook releases.

after seeing the pictures of these new lenticulars from Zavvi, there was only one thing I sane person that already has all those titles from previous releases do, CANCEL them all. I had pre-ordered and cancelled the following: Lion King (Sold out so maybe someone can grab it), Snow White, Frozen, Nemo (sold out too), Toy Story and all the others. I will still get Rocketeer, but will sell it on Ebay or something since I have the original edition and will be very happy with it and not this new one.

I have the original as well. I think this I guess is a nice gesture by them to offer them to members that weren't able to get them the first go around.

This is a pretty well done lenti but on closer look it suffers from being misaligned from the actual steelbook. Not a bad effort though.

i just bought a copy.
It's not a film that i felt i HAVE to have absolutely, but I don't know, i was influenced by the steelbook and the design!

I got the email about their clearance sale too. It is a movie worth owning and I've had my eye on this steelbook for awhile now. I might end up ordering it too depending on if I go broke or not on some of the other stuff first.

I have just now seen this reply.
Sorry, Cliff. My opinion wasn't about this specific movie.
It was about OLDER movies, where movie studios simply didn't produce tons of bonus features. It has nothing to do with exactly this movie only for the fact that it's another older movie (and it was a major flop).

That was my whole point about it.
If this one would have been made 2 years ago, you would get tons of bonus features.

Quote:

Again, this one here is literally nothing against Blade Runner.
Blade Runner is a cult movie for ages now. It's not like this happened 5 years ago.
And that's not about shitting on this movie (and never was). I guess you misunderstood what I was saying and thought I would be taking a dump on it, which I wasn't.

Quote:

My point is: Nowadays it's very cheap (and also lucrative) to make bonus features and it also makes sense because of DVD/Blu-ray market.

Back then studios simply did not create tons of such content, which means they would have to produce it later, which obviously costs money. Sometimes quite a lot of money.

When studios see that something makes tons of money, then there is a higher probability of said studios producing new extra content like doing interviews, creating audio commentaries and so on.

Nowadays the situation is different and even crap movies have tons of content, because you can make that easily and cheaply while making the movie. That was my whole point.

Quote:

What is this even about?
Yes, steelbooks sell out at some point. That happens all the time.
But yes, I do know that. Again - you thought I was shitting on this movie and that was not (and was never) my intent at all.

Quote:
(and at many more copies than Fright Night's 1000) so your comparison is both apples to Volkswagons and not even well researched on your part.
My information is that Fright Night was 2000 copies.
And it sold out even before pre-orders were supposed to start.
That almost never happens.

And even Fright Night releases up until 30th Anniversary US release and this new UK edition got almost no extra content except for trailers. And several releases did not even get trailers. Rocketeer at least has a trailer on every single Blu-ray.

In any case, you see it right here.
This one was released more than 1 year ago.
Still not sold out, although it's one of 3 worldwide in total and it's even a lenti one.

Quote:

That's simply your opinion.
And just to note: I actually never said that it was solely about theatrical popularity.

Quote:
Disney has a horrible track record producing supplements for even their hits.
All sorts of Disney release that I own feature tons of extras.
Including animated movies from 80 years ago.
No idea which hits you are talking about. I do not own tons of Disney movies though.

Quote:
That Rocketeer got not one, but two steelbook releases is all you need to know about the love for that movie.
That doesn't mean anything at all.
There were only 2 steelbook releases in UK. One in Germany and at least according to blu-ray.com that is it.

All of those releases basically look the same. This new UK one got a lenti, and features at least the same front artwork.

Rocketeer has an audience, but it's not something major like for example Blade Runner. I would call it niche. And again, this is not shitting on the movie. Tons of my most favorite movies are niche. I bought this steelbook myself, even day 1, which is something that I normally never do. And it was a blind-buy too.

Quote:
And that's yet another reason why you're not in charge of picking steelbook releases.
I said that I WOULD WANT blu-ray releases for those other movies first. As in I as a customer. And once more, this isn't about shitting on anything, it's simply my personal opinion and it's quite mental to act like you did based on that, especially when I bought this steel myself. Quite weird to be frankly.

Oh right and I wrote BLU-RAYS, not STEELBOOKS.

Not because I hate this movie - again - but because the ones are listed are very niche non-Hollywood productions, which means it's way less likely that they ever get one. And this here is at least Disney.

Another point of mine: be happy that this here got at the very least a Blu-ray release. Tons of (other) great movies don't.
