Older Sony models you say right ? It has been said in another thread by people
who compared LG and Sony 2016 (Z9D) models side by side that the 3D on both is stunning. You can't tell the difference.

Throw me on the same train as those upset with the loss of 3D. I too, was one who brushed off 3D for all it's life saying it's just a gimmick and hating seeing 3D movies at the theatre. However, I purchased 3D Blu-rays whenever available because I liked the better packaging mostly. And on Black Friday I knew I had to buy the 65E6P as I predicted then that no TVs released in 2017 would be equipped with 3D. I'm sad I was right, but happy about my purchase. Coming from the Pioneer Kuro Elite 60" plasma too btw, which now sits in my basement as I can't bring myself to sell it.

Glad I have 3D now for several years into the future, hopefully by the time I need to replace it, glasses-free 3D or holographs will be a thing

3D was indeed marketed wrong.

Unfortunately, 3D came after the first generation of high definition television sets had peaked and then came the drop in TV sales in general. So cannot say 3D TVs were a flop as it was the feature was introduced at the wrong time. Nobody was going to replace a fairly new set just to get 3D.

The industry was incorrect believing consumers would "upgrade" or treat TVs like commodities ala personal computers.

Instead of 3D televisions, 3D should have been introduced as a feature in many models. Apps in "smart" televisions, are really nothing more than television sets with built in browsers. Though maybe a better selling point with video streaming now gaining popularity, 3D at this point does not need to be used as a major selling point as it could rather be an added feature to "wet the whistle".

It worked with me.

3D can be streamlined. Need a built-in 3D feature in the set to get it. It's not expensive to manufacture nor to spend and am sure with one not having to buy a disc or blu ray player for that purpose, and the glasses coming with the set, might spend a few more dollars to see Captain America, Superman, etc. in 3D. That can possibly generate more business with collectors, etc. And adding it as a feature, perhaps "forcing" it as a feature in mid to high range sets, would only add a few dollars to the consumer, who would not even be aware of the added expense. But collectively, the sales would prove more profitable for the consumer electronics industry as well.

Mind you, am not talking about 3D broadcasts of live events. That is too costly for networks, at least for the moment. But the movies, they are still there and this way those who enjoy it in the theater can enjoy it in the home without the expense of having to buy a blu ray player and expensive disc. What that then leads to is anyone's guess but it certainly would keep 3D home theater alive and kicking.

Well, broke it to my wife that I'm probably looking to buy around the Super Bowl, etc. She responded as she always does: With indifference.

The mentality problem appears to be people on this forum, unaware that they are supporting a niche/hobbyist format. This is a Blu Ray forum. How many hours per week of all the 3D capable sets out there are used for 3D Blu Ray? A tiny, tiny amount ~0.2% - us. Most people use their TV for watching broadcast TV (88.7%). I work out that DVD makes up 3.4%, Blu Ray 2.3% and Streaming 5.6%. If you wanted 3DTV to survive then the protest should have been with the broadcasters, not with the TV manufacturers. But of course broadcasters will say that viewing figures were just too weak to sustain (<5% of 3D capable TVs were used to watch broadcast 3D).

The sheep/herd mentality from the manufacturers is economics-related - they're all following the money. BD3D sales make up only 10-15% of 3D sales at most. That's compared to the average 60% box office share that 3D enjoys in the cinema. Why do only 1:4 people who enjoy 3D (watch it at the cinema), actually watch it at home?

I for one am glad that we got as far as we did with 3DTV to get this many 3D titles available to view at home - something which wasn't possible previously.

Get a short-throw projector. There are some good ones out there already. (5 ft will get you 100" - http://www.projectorcentral.com/benq...tor-review.htm)

If you're wondering if there's a future in that, it's obviously top of the range and way too pricey right now ($25,000) but Sony unveiled a new 4K HDR 3D Laser-light ultra-short throw projector at CES yesterday.

The last few years, there has been no promotion of 3D TV’s. Nothing on printed paper, internet or TV broadcast. Even stores do not promote them. Most TV manufacturers stopped producing 3D sets. Only Sony and LG were selling 3D TV’s last year and only in their high end sets. All the 3D channels are gone. HBO dropped 3D On Demand. But, more 3D Blu-ray titles were released in 2016 than in any previous year. So, maybe this is not such a big a deal. We will have to see how many 3D Blu-ray titles are released in 2017.

This. We'll see how many studios drop the format in the coming year. That will be an indication of where things are going.

Yesterday on another forum, Mike2001 posted IMO, the most-likely reason why LG removed 2017's Polarization layer (forcing the elimination of 3D) on their sets.:
Quote:
Speculation was that they might remove the polarization layer in order to achieve the small brightness increase that seems to be an HDR selling point. Will be interesting to see if that is the case.
Only LG was behind in HDR 4K/UHD brightness levels, even though OLED totally dominated infinite blacks. LG got nervous thinking Sony 2D OLEDS would change the marketing edge?

Only a guess. There are a number of valid reason's mentioned on this thread, but it hit home as a major contender.

Has Sony presented yet? Rumors are they will use LG panels, so ... wouldn't that mean no 3D for them, either?

TBH, I think the support from studios will drop as well. Pure economics. No new clients to sell too, they will stop releasing them.

Blu-ray is still niche. Don't forget that of those 12% you mentioned only ~39% watch/buy Blu-rays - so around 6%?. The rest are still rocking DVDs on those HDTV and even 4K TVs.

3D and 4K is as niche of a niche. If Blu-ray is a tough sell as it is, 4K will never be more than a niche, like 3D.

I agree about the POV. I tried to get into HDR but its mehhh and returned it all. Not much there that you can't get with a good 4k master on bluray. People buying expensive players so they can remove the HDR baggage that it brings to the table. Strange format. It will be a streaming only world soon enough.

According to CNET, none of LG's 2017 TVs will support 3D.

My wife is nagging at me to move but the thought of having to move my TV scares the hell out me. If anything happens to it that will be it - it's already irreplaceable in that you can't buy good 3D plasma TVs now but my planned future 4K upgrade looks like it will never happen.

One thing I guarantee. I will NEVER again buy a TV that isn't 3D compatible, if there aren't any available to buy then I just won't buy another TV. Just like I won't buy any 2D-only release of a film that was released theatrically in 3D.

I will seriously now have to look at projectors and what space they need because I refuse to live in a future where I can't watch my 500+ 3D blu rays at home.
