He later said that many scenes look great in the format. He was very surprised.

Well dang. When this was wrongly announced as shooting with IMAX 3D gear I'd planned to head up to the IMAX with Laser in Reading for it. But I'd rather a whole movie in 3D than two scenes in expanded AR. I guess I'll see it at my usual Cinemark XD instead.

I'm hoping to go to a screening of this tonight, but I have no idea whether it will be the 3D version or not...

...and it wasn't the 3D version. I saw the film in IMAX 2D, which didn't really impress me other than the size of the screen. I didn't notice any expanded ratio shots, probably because I was sitting three rows from the front. Needless to say, I'm sure it will look better in 3D. I was actually surprised at how dark and grainy some shots were, not sure how well those will convert, same goes for the shakycam, close-ups and rapid-fire editing. I preferred the style of the last film. But there's plenty of action that I'm sure will be significantly enhanced by 3D - running, jumping, fighting, vehicles, dangling from high places - everything you'd expect from a Mission: Impossible movie.

Yeah, the last movie, MI: Rogue Nation, awesome action/adventure movie, with great camera work, cinematography. I have to watch that again before seeing this in 3D. Really hoping for a strong 3D conversion like the Marvel films lately. If this matches the mostly stronger 3D of Edge of Tomorrow 3D with Tom Cruise, this could be great in 3D.

Chris on the 3D:

As for recommendations, because of our compressed post, I never had a chance to see the full film in 3D so I can’t say. What I saw was impressive and my team tells me the finished film is quite something.

Well I wouldn't be too concerned about pre-orders with the film still over a week from release. But it will be a good indicator where Paramount stands on 3D blu now as it's been over a year since they released a movie in 3D theatrically and is a big franchise (before this they did release The Last Knight and Ghost in the Shell on 3D blu, but didn't for Ben-Hur and Monster Trucks).

Yep. He did say that he was incredibly busy that he couldn't finish watching it in the format. It seems to me that he genuinely liked the conversion.

We'll see next week.

Typical that the director hadn't even seen the 3D conversion. Considering this movie initially announced that it was going to be filmed in 3D!

For only two sequences though, as the rest of the film was always going to be 35mm and converted to 3D.

Ah well Alpha is out shortly. Fingers crossed it’s better than the trailer makes it look. Otherwise, November/December can’t come soon enough for us 3D fans (Alita and Fantastic Beasts 2).

We're not talking Jason Bourne levels of shakycam thankfully, but the camera does noticeably go handheld here and there. The dark tunnel scenes were strange in that one shot would be VERY grainy and the next one would be fine. There's a shootout down there where I wasn't sure who was shooting at who. But that's mainly just one location, the whole film isn't underlit or anything.

If the film had been in 3D it would have looked terrible from where I was sitting. My seat was so close to the screen that I couldn't actually follow the quick edits in the title sequence. Basically, it appeared to me that the film was just shot with 2D in mind, but if the conversion team did a good job then there should be some 3D thrills to be had from the stunts for sure.

It helps that the film is reasonably pacy and up to the Cruiser's normal crowd-pleasing standards - my wife hates long films but she didn't get bored of this one...

Can't wait to watch this, I'm sure to love it. Been rewatching the others in 4K. Such a great franchise.

I do love the franchise (excluding 2, although it has its awesome moments). Just Rogue Nation to rewatch.

Based on JACK REACHER & ROGUE NATION I have confidence the film will deliver. Also exciting is the fact that Henry Cavill wants Christopher McQuarrie to direct the next Superman film.

How would you rank them in order?

I'd say:

MI Rogue Nation 5/5
MI Ghost Protocol (title?) 4/5
MI 2 4/5
MI 3 3/5
MI 1 (I have to watch it again, but 3/5)

Hopefully MI Fallout 3D tops the list, but it's going to be tough to beat that BMW motorcycle street chase. That was awesome as a sport bike fan.

2. MI
3. MI: Ghost Protocol
4. MI: 2
5. MI: 3
