All I care about -- and I LOVE the Oscars (I don't care what you say!) -- is that Deakins wins. 13 Academy Award nominations, zero wins. Hell, in 2008 he was nominated for BOTH The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford AND No Country for Old Men -- and won for NEITHER!!!
Either one of those should have won. But to lose on BOTH?! Come on. At that point, it's practically just getting petty. It's like, "HAHA! You lost!" (Yes, I know it's nothing like that. It just seems that way now.) But, at least from what I can tell at this point, Blade Runner 2049 looks breathtaking. As usual. Come on Academy -- get your #&%$ together. |

Of all the categories, I think Best Animated Feature is the hardest one to predict right now. Lego Batman is frontrunner, but remember the Academy skipped the original Lego Movie so even that isn't a lock. Captain Underpants is probably second due to great reviews but I don't think it'll be taken that seriously. Cars 3 and Despicable Me 3 both got mediocre reviews. I think Coco probably has the best chance and we don't know how it's gonna turn out.

Loving Vincent, the all oil painting film, may have a shot if Coco sucks and this one blows people away. But it's an indie film, and I've already read mixed things on it. |

This category is weak as far as mainstream options go. So far the only ones that have gotten decent reviews are Lego Batman and Captain Underpants. And from what remains to be released it seems only Coco and maybe Ferdinand could get good reviews. So, assuming the new rule changes for the category don't have a huge impact, I'd look for GKids to fill two of the slots with either The Bread Winner (the first film they've produced themselves, presented by Angelina Jolie), The Girl Without Hands, My Entire Highschool is Sinking Into the Sea, or Birdboy |

Let's not forget, there is a Paul Thomas Anderson film starring Daniel Day-Lewis being released on Christmas.
I'm not certain on the rules, but I think PTA doing the cinematography himself negates any chance of a nomination in that category. |

He should be eligible, but depending on union rules, might be credited under a pseudonym and that pseudonym actually gets nominated. This happened fairly recently with editing nominations for No Country for Old Men and Dallas Buyers Club as the directors could not be officially credited (though James Cameron has been officially credited and nominated for editing- perhaps he belongs to the editors union).

So far, Dunkirk is looking to be the frontrunner for this year's award season. I expect Best Picture and Best Director nods, as well as Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Film Editing, Best Production Design, etc.
Blade Runner 2049 will most definitely get a Best Cinematography nod (and hopefully Deakins will finally win for this one) as well as Best Production Design. As for how the movie will ultimately play out, I'm very optimistic considering Denis Villeneuve's track record. War for the Planet of the Apes will probably snag a Best Visual Effects award. I mean, come on... the apes look STUNNING. Paul Thomas Anderson's new movie will snag some nominations, most likely a Best Actor nod to Daniel-Day Lewis. I'm very curious as to how he'll helm the camera as his own DP, but I'm looking forward to it since I'm a fan of his visual style. |

Baby Driver should get so many technical nominations. ESPECIALLY for sound. If it doesn't it will be absolutely ridiculous.
