The closest the Resident Evil movies ever got to the games? Look no further than the Capcom produced CGI animated Resident Evil movies, and there you go. No need for live-action movie loose adaptations for games made of CGI characters. Keep them CGI animated like the games IMO.

6 films planned. That was back in 2017, now 2025. 0 films so far for the new live-action Resident Evil reboot. Track record, not good so far.
Unless they meant the CGI animated ones, which are entertaining. I do like some of the live-action Milla ones, but not really based on the games accurately. |

I'll reserve my judgment for the finished product, but Zach Cregger's attachment does admittedly have me interested. It shouldn't be that hard to make a Resident Evil film that skews close to the games, especially the first few, and hiring someone who's adept in comedy feels like a good idea. RE1 especially had quite a few moments of shlock- be they awkward translation, bad acting, etc. which have only added to its good reputation, I'd argue. Having those little moments of humor to break the tension can work really well, just like it did in Barbarian.
I don't mind a few liberties here and there- add in/take out a character or two (as long as they're not crucial to the plot), flesh out some characters a bit more (before the zombies "flesh" them out), take a monster or two out, etc., but stick to the spirit of the games. Don't try and cram 2 or 3 games into one movie. There's more than enough story and setpieces in RE1 to support a full movie, especially if they add in some of the RE1 remake elements like Lisa Trevor. Or, alternatively, create a new story that still keeps the spirit of the games alive. The first 2 or so of the PTA films skewed close enough to the games, even if they were an odd mix of the horror of the earlier games and the adrenaline action of the latter games. If you're not going to fully adapt one of the games, make a new story that can fit adjacent to the mainline games. There's obviously quite a good movie that could be made of the initial outbreak in Raccoon City and people trying to escape amidst the pandemonium. Whatever monsters they do decide to include, I hope get a decent enough feature. As much as the first Silent Hill movie is a guilty pleasure, it did very much feel like a "greatest hits" in terms of monsters- each one, apart from Pyramid Head, comes in for a quick little setpiece, and is never seen again. If you're only going to feature a creature in only one scene, have it be a memorable one and have them pose a real threat. Except the spiders; leave the spiders the hell out of the movie. Anyway, I digress. I know this movie is a long way's off, but I'll be watching its development closely. |

I haven't played RE0 yet. 0 is a clever way to say it's a prequel to the 1st game.
I guess it reveals the origin of the T Virus Contagion. Umbrella Corp was initially trying to offer products to improve things for people, but their experiments crossed the line and zombies were born. Along with other monstrous mutations that got out of control. Sounds potentially familiar of worldwide pandemics. Scientific experiments accidentally escaping. 28 Days Later to 28 Years Later series continue that concept, where the Chimps with the rage experimental virus, escape, attack the protestors, and spread the Rager virus to millions as a result of good intentions of the protestors. Whose fault is it really though? The protestors unaware of the virus and trying to free the Chimps, or the indifferent scientists using the Chimps for their deadly experiments? Or the government that allowed the experiments to proceed? |

I didn't mind WtRC at all. It was just some odd casting that was the only real negative for me. Also enjoyed the first two Jovovich films as well.

Huge RE game fan since 96, played all the games, still do. Love the first RE movie, Extinction, Afterlife and Welcome To Racoon City. Love some of the CG films too. This is the most hyped I've been for a RE film adaptation ever, loved Barbarian. One of my top favorite horror films of 2020s so far. Going to RE Zero is great too, underrated heavy horror entry in the series. So I'm optimistic

RE: Afterlife 3D, that's pretty good despite some slow parts. I'll rewatch that in 3D soon. That has the best fight scenes in the series I'd say. Like an action-horror film.
The games are mostly weapon/gun/rifle based. If you run out of ammo, you're in a lot more trouble as there is no easy way to defeat a Licker who is fast. Along with the rabid dogs and other mutants. |

Do it justice this time. Did the screen writers even watch/play/read anything about the characters from the games? Welcome to Racoon City was woeful.
