I'll take most any old movie that's good, in 3D
In a different universe we could be pining over the 3d release of 'who is harry crumb?'

I bet joe has ran cool runnings through his darbee in simulated 3d

UK pre-orders are up and no sign of a 3D pre-order as expected.

Yeah, I've left my customary one star review on Amazon, it looks like this is another one for the bargain bin, evidently Fox don't want my money any more.

I had K2 released in the format, then it was ditched pretty quickly.

There was a 1-page ad for the movie "in IMAX 3D" in the Metro newspaper in London this mornimg. My local Odeon has 3D and IMAX 3D showings for today as well.

Saw it in Real D. Thought it was a mixed bag. Had some good 3D effects and depth. Other times it looked like cardboard cutouts. I’m guessing due to a rushed conversion. Maybe better in IMAX. The film was a bit of a mess too. Good but not great.

When I got to the Imax theater, (Wednesday 12th Sept) there were about 3 or 4 guys outside in full Predator outfits. Enthusiastic superfans, I thought, but on further inspection, it seemed to be a paid promotional event. I think the idea was that the people taking their photos with these guys would put it on facebook and this will generate hype. Not a bad idea, but wasted on the likes of me.

I would say this isn't a bad movie at all; it didn't feel like a rehash of previous Predator movies, and they had a lot of new concepts and ideas, many of them good. Somehow it didn't all come together. It was all fast moving, with interesting things going on, and a lot of information to process, but always a nagging feeling that things don't quite add up. Felt like a lot of deliberate confusion and distraction to gloss over things. There's a multitude of characters in this, and it seemed like they never stop telling you stuff. Some quite good actors, but too much banter, bickering, and spouting comedy dialog. The one important element largely absent was scenes of quiet, carefully choreographed suspense.

I've never been a major fan of the series, they always felt in a similar vein to the Alien and Terminator franchises, but never quite on the same level. I found the first film effective, never saw the sequel in its entirety, found AVP ridiculous, and thought Predators was quite solid, if forgettable. The Predator feels like a much more substantial movie than any of these; it's expansive, with a lot of ingredients, and a lot of world building going on. It even sets up a sequel. A lot of effort clearly went into this, and if I had to boil down my criticism, I would say this is a film that is fundamentally lacking in focus. It goes off in too many different directions. It's been a number of years since I saw any of them, but I recall both Predator and Predators being tighter overall.

The 3D is a reputable conversion. It has been done to a high standard in general, as conversions go. A few fleeting scenes may have been slightly off, but never glaringly so. Expect strong/medium depth and separation, solid foreground objects with volume for much of the film. As expected, a large portion of The Predator is set at night. I didn't have any problems with darkness or dimness and thought the lighting was well handled. I couldn't say there was anything especially unique or memorable about the 3D presentation, but it's a worthwhile added enhancement to a mostly entertaining movie.

Anything special with the IMAX version like expanded ratio sequences?
I am seeing it in IMAX (with the AMC pass covering the ticket, getting to see it on a 100 foot wide screen is the way to go), though since we aren't getting a 3D option here would be nice if they add something extra to the IMAX version like they did with Kingsman 2 and The Death Cure.

The early reviews all seem to mention the comedy aspect being very prevalent, and many are calling it an action comedy. Did you find that distracting or did it work like in some of the Marvel films?

I think Noah was the first notable film to do so, but since then there have been a bunch of films which are 3D in some international territories and 2D only in the US unfortunately.

I don't think WB or Disney have done so with any theatrical releases, but Fox in particular seems to have cooled on American 3D, as I believe War for the Planet of the Apes and Alita are their only live action 3D titles of 2017 and 2018 (and as mentioned, since War the latest Kingsman and Maze Runner releases also had no US 3D release, though with Cameron producing Alita is a different case).

Its such a tease that Fandango.com shows this movie is available in 3D and IMAX 3D, here in the US, yet no theater showings near me have any 3D AT ALL.

Will have to settle for 2D.

I actually remember seeing Noah in 3D here, in theaters. Conversion was good.

I read on here that the director of noah hates 3d, but it enhanced the film for sure.

I'm not a fan of the series, either. But I think the first one is near perfection.

Thank you for the review.

The first Predator may be my most viewed movie. I have no hope of liking the new one and I can't see it in 3d but I'll see it anyway just to use one of my AMC a-list slots.
