The new version of Beastmaster is also region free.

Get ready for Beyond Re-Animator to look exactly the same on the Vestron disc, I'm afraid.

Almost certain that Umbrella just obtained the same masters from Lionsgate that they intended to use on their discs - they rarely apply any additional post-processing on their end, so the DNR on the Beyond disc is likely just what they were given to work with.

Dagon, I suspect, will be the same.

Jesus, that looks terrible, poor compression and dnr. Looks like they colored the thing with marker.

So this is a washout? This could be the final nail in the coffin for Vestron. So sad.

I'd rather not spend any money on it when the screenshots look like that.

Yea, those screenshots are very waxy, and currently my pre-order sits at $30. I might have to cancel, and hope the price comes down some, and try to grab it later. I don't know if those screenshots warrant $30 right now. I'll have to think on it... I'm a huge Lovecraft fan. Ahh, I got to the 24th to decide.

While I can understand this point of view, particularly from someone that would have to pay a premium to import the release, all I can really say is enjoy your dvd copy of the film.

In a perfect world every release would feature exquisite picture quality but sadly when Lionsgate is involved and it's a catalog title, I'll take what I can get. It's unlikely that any of these titles will end up like Near Dark, Dead Alive, etc., etc., but it's also not out of the realm of possibility.

I've only seen this film once & that was on VHS when it first came out. I don't really remember much of it right now, but I do remember being a bit underwhelmed with it. I traded the tape in at a small toy store here in town several years ago, so might pick this up at the right price for a re-eval.

EDIT: Images aren't loading so try accessing the server hosting them directly.

http://www.rockshockpop.com/screencaps/Dagon/

You may need to click "Parent Directory" then Click "dagon" and then you can check the images.

Well, apparently Umbrella didn't use DNR at all on the Australian release, which also happens to be region free. Seems the only boo-boo on that one is a botched 2.0 track that's flagged as 5.1.

Strange... I linked directly to their directory and verified that they worked after posting. Seems there is a problem with the Rockshockpop server. I've edited my post so folks can check the images out directly.

An ass-old HD master was to be expected (let's face it—Vestron is the laziest catalog label around); the atrocious compression and smeariness are a complete surprise. Better just to go with an overseas option.

IMO in that shot the Vestron release looks better, at least proper HD instead of an upscale. Are they really based on the same master?

I should get my Umbrella copy within the next 2 weeks. I ordered this because they stated, that there was no DNR used on their release. I will post my thoughts as soon as I have watched the australian disc.

(Still) Happy that I did not order the Vestron disc; would have cancelled my pre-order, if I´d made one after having seen those horrible screen caps.
