Given how this one ended it would be funny if the Solo/Kenobi movies actually turn out to be a connected Emilia Clarke series plotting her turn and downfall like Darth Vader...

Loved it.
Random thoughts in no particular order. I think it was brilliant that they set up this whole side-story of Crimson Dawn and Maul, it's all about outsiders - It's a stand-alone film about stand-alone 'solo' characters. It's about characters outside the usual categorisations of Jedi/Sith / Empire/Rebels. It's about love and loyalty and friendship but also and betrayal and mistrust. Would really like another couple of these films with the same core cast - maybe have it overlap with an Obi-Wan movie, and/or Boba Fett/Jabba. Alden Ehrenreich was excellent as Solo as was Donald Glover as Lando. Joonas Suotamo captured Chewie again brilliantly too. I can already imagine the anti-SWJ whingeing about L3. There was less of her in it than I thought there'd be. But I loved her whole thing about equality, the callback to droids being not served in the Cantina in Ep IV (so don't tell me messages about social justice don't belong in Star Wars - it's always had that). I am glad I listened to Last Shot before seeing this film for more L3 - not at all essential, but it enhanced it for me I think. Great to see Maul back. If people are confused they should look at his legs and join the dots. You don't need to have seen The Clone Wars and Rebels. It's Maul - he's alive, so he isn't dead. He has clearly visible robotic legs, so yeah, figure it out yourselves people! It's not that hard, is it? If one had never known who he was/never seen Episode I then he's the big bad boss of Crimson Dawn. Still works either way. I loved how Dryden Vos was like this mini-Maul. Red scars that flare up when angry, almost Sith-like eyes at some points, and twin-bladed weapon that glows red huh? Remind you of anyone? ![]() Thought the music was great on first listen. Not quite OT/PT Williams level, but very little is, in anything(!). Some nice weaving in/introductions of classic themes. Noticed a few nice little instances of music from Rogue One in there too. Got a bit distracted by some weird (real-world) altercation in the cinema I was in (not involving me!) during the maw bit unfortunately so that bit is a little hazy to me, but I will be seeing this again, soon. I feel like I've forgotten about 50% of the stuff I thought during the film, it had so much going on, and yet it didn't try to cram in loads of characters all the time, it placed all its chips on Han, Lando, Chewie and Qi-ra and, for me at least, won big! Loved it. Last edited by Porco Azzurro; 05-24-2018 at 08:58 PM. Reason: Suotamo! Suotamo! |
