Oh man... This is a tough one as they're both great character actors and as much as I appreciated the former's portrayal of gangster Jack Carter along with his performances as Dr. Robert Elliott (a.k.a "Bobbi") and Alfred Pennyworth, nothing beats the latter's performance as "Popeye" Doyle and Little Bill so I gotta go with:

One scene has a student talking about his senior thesis based on the "Caine/Hackman Theory". The theory being at any given time, on any given day, you can always find a Michael Caine or Gene Hackman movie on TV **

I take nothing away from the former as he appeared in some iconic features such as "My Darling Clementine" and some noteworthy noirs like "Kiss of Death", "Pick-up Alley" (a.k.a "Interpol") & "Violent Saturday". But the latter appeared in two features that I've admired and they happen to be the quintessential film noir: "The Big Combo" and the ludicrous thriller: "The Naked Prey". So:
