Nope, not a valid arguement because those are exceptions that audiences like to watch as dumb popcorn flicks. Whilst audience tastes have changed, a movie has to hit certain notes. None of the ones you mentioned typically blend those elements. I saw Blade Runner 2049 and whilst visuslly impressive, i don't felt it did a great deal to engage me as a viewer. Again, quality of movie isn't always an issue. It's just not a mainstream appealing movie is all.

Think of this, movies like The Matrix when they came out and gripped everybody had a blend of amazing action and smart story for the most part. John Wick is also a great example of a simple story of revenge sprinkled with amazing action scenes and pacing to keep that going till the end.

Whilst some deride the world building in JW2, i'd say it did an adequate job to expsnd but keep the action rocking throughout.

Gladiator felt like a "complete" movie and Russel wasn't exactly looking like a super jacked Gerard Butler in Gladiator and seeing him reprise such a role all these yesrs later with a more portly physique trying to play the character the same way would be tragic.

Yep - great way to put it. The Alien franchise is all but dead yet he keeps trying and they are all fails. The original Gladiator is a classic and I love it but the last thing it needs is a sequel.

Freegin absurd.

Utterly pointless really, and as a big fan of Sir Riddles of Scott, I hope he drops the idea

Well, nothing surprises me when money is involved.

All it takes is for someone to say "Hey, Ridley, how about 100M for a sequel to Gladiator? The Top Gun: Maverick writer is on board, so all you have to do is say yes and we're lit green as gold.

Bale. Evans. Fassbender. Hardy. Hemsworth. All of them could transform this into a tentpole. Or go younger (and less expensive) with Taron Egerton or Miles Teller.

It's certainly a smarter move than another Alien film as his next project. If G2 goes Maximus, well, who knows how much money they'll throw at him for the next Alien film.

Call the sequel "Gladiators" and that sequel could use those characters played by them actors inspired by Maximus as people that were maybe under his command deployed to different places during the time of the first movie and something that made them end up Gladiators etc.

This is literally the same terrible idea that was kicked around for a sequel over 10 years ago. No one liked it then, and I cannot see anyone liking it now. A sequel to Gladiator w/ obviously no Russell Crowe and no Joaquin Phoenix feels like something that should be direct to video... except that the elite director that made the original is returning.

I get your point ( I refuse to see Venom or the Meg ) but there are a number of reasons why Blade Runner 2 failed. While it looked and sounded incredible ( it really did ) unfortunately that's it. It had no substance. It wasn't as clever as it thought it was. There was no story, it was poorly acted, nothing was happening, it was overly long and self indulgent. The worst crime of all, it was boring. I keep saying it, it should have been a 20 minute short.

Dont forget to change the gender of all the main characters.

Guaranteed $1 billion.

Seriously though, i'm all for "Strong female" representation but not when it's completely at the expense of realism. Gladiator actually had female gladiators which some probably forget and they weren't done jn a "Go girlpower(!)" way but on the same way everybody else was shown. That's equality. Not making a big booha out of it and dancing it up and down in front of audiences to tick an SJW box.

I feel like if you're gonna do an empowerment aspect, just be realistic. I hate to see people complain reality didn't live up to their favourite Hollywood fantasy

Part 1 ended with Juba saying "I will see you again, but not yet, not yet"

So Part 2 should have featured Juba being a Gladiator, who was killed and then he has vision walking across the straw field seeing Maximus in distance and then they run for man hug

I just don't get it why Ridley feels the need to go back to the well with sequels of his early work. He's got to still have enough clout to get original material produced.

And get James Cameron to direct instead.

Maybe he doesnt though? Hollywood and/or producers are looking for SURE things these days. Hence, reboots, remakes, sequels, prequels, etc, etc are the norm. They would much prefer to work with something established. For whatever reason it does seem to mostly work as evident by the never ending barrage of 100% cookie cutter super hero films raking it in.

Its hardly worth a chance on anything new when you can go to the existing well and make a billion on another rehash of the same old crap. Im not saying I like it - I surely dont but from a business perspective it isnt usually worth taking any chances.

I really have no idea what to think about a sequel. I'll still check it out, but I'm not expecting anything good. It's just unnecessary.

Count me in under the "use Nick Cave's script" banner. Talk about taking a risk, and with Cave writing and if Scott were to bring his A-game, it could've been a masterpiece.

How about a movie where J. Paul Getty uses his vast wealth to put together a team consisting of Maximus, Hannibal Lecter, Thelma, Louise, Jordan O'Neill, Roy Waller, Nick Conklin and Mark Watney to stop David and his band of replicants, who may or may not be working for Darkness?

His last two movies were huge flops.

Can we just make the original idea for the sequel instead? This is destined to be boring and pointless. At least the other idea was insanity at its finest.
