Isn't part of the (sporadic) Soul Calibur storyline that each of the characters carries at least one fragment of the swords? If we need a plausible excuse why the lightsabers don't go right through them, that would do it, no?

Only if they're carrying either of the two WTFPWNZ0R blades.

I suspect that it'll be a situation where they're just guests to the world.

I believe your are correct at least thats the way it was for SCII because Nightmare had been defeated and was trying to reclaim the other parts of the sword to complete his transformation again. This game is a must buy I am a huge fan of the series, I will admit that Vader in this universe is odd to say the least, but between him and yoda I am glad we are getting Vader as our exclusive.

How gutted must 360 owners be that they get Yoda and we get Vader!! lol

As for finding a reason for them being there... Really, I wouldn't worry, it's just a game. Enjoy it!

gimmicks.
soul caliber lost it when they did the one with an extra character on each platform. I remember my gf's gamecube version..... link.... battling with the likes of azurath. I did'nt find it believable. I thought it was a wack effort to buy some supporters.

If you are not creative enuff to make up your own characters maybe you should go back to changing the fry grease.

If i wanted to play as yoda of darth vador I guess I would play 1 of the 1000's of licensed star wars games.

I don't think they're lacking the talent to create new characters, just giving the game a huge selling point, not just for hardcore gamers but Star Wars fans. It won't just be gaming sites covering the game anymore. Fighters like platformers don't sell well anymore so a fighter with incredibly high production values like this needs a gimmick.
