Not seen any of his prior work. I'd forgotten all about The Glass Castle, the trailers played consistently for weeks at my local cinemas but the film itself never materialised!

Interesting choice. Have not seen Glass Castle, but Short Term 12 is a little miracle of a movie.

I wonder if Wong will team up with Shang-Chi! and if they'll be fast as lighting????

geez, i saw Short Term 12 for free on vudu a couple of months ago, and not surprised you guys think it was real great. Nothing special, slightly better than most of the free movies on there. I mean, it had a cohesive beginning and ending. Brie Larson plays her sullen self that somehow people think is a difficult emotion to portray in acting?

I had no idea what the director look like, then i saw his profile pic

well played Marvel

I was shocked they're going with Shang-Chi. As a long time Marvel comic book reader I knew of the character, but never had any interest in him. He was always a knock off of Bruce Lee and was a completely useless character. We're talking "D" level character at best.

Maybe this director, with a great writer/cast can do something with him.
Maybe even something similar to Big Trouble in Little China (in terms of tone).

Let's not forget that GOTG and Doctor Strange were also D-list characters.

GOTG certainly.

Dr. Strange....I'd debate that. C or maybe B if there was some type of cross over. Definitely not marketed, or written, for the masses like Avengers/X-Men/Spider-Man

Shang-Chi is less well known than Namor. Marvel would be better off, most likely, doing a movie about him...if the rights weren't tied up at Universal (as far as I remember).

As major a Marvel as I am, I honestly don't care all that much about this movie. I will see it, as I see all of these. But in terms of pre-movie conversation, meh. I don't have any loyalty really to this character and only read a limited amount of comics he was featured in. I care a lot more about Eternals than I do this.

Marvel can make up a completely new character for the screen and it'll make $500m. Doesn't even matter what tier comic book character they are at this point.

I agree with that. I just find it hard to muster that much enthusiasm for this. I am sure the movie will be enjoyable and all that, I just don't care about this one nearly as much as others.

I'd hope not. Marvel needs to mature a bit, and they are at a crushingly slow pace, and tone back some of the humor. *looks at BP* Man, that one really could have done w/o a good bit of the humor.

Does he have any powers? I've heard of the character but I've never read anything with him in it.

As far as i know, he's "just" The Master of Kung Fu

but wikipedia says this:

Quote:
Powers and abilities
Although it has never been determined exactly how extensive Shang-Chi's fighting skills are, he has beaten numerous superhuman opponents. Shang-Chi is classed as an athlete but he is one of the best non-superhumans in martial arts and has dedicated much of his life to the art, being referred to by some as the greatest empty-handed fighter and practitioner of kung fu alive. Much of his physical abilities seem to stem from his mastery of chi, which often allows him to surpass physical limitations of normal athletes. He has also demonstrated the ability to dodge bullets from machine guns and sniper rifles, and is able to deflect gunshots with his bracers. Shang-Chi is also highly trained in the arts of concentration and meditation, and is an expert in various hand weapons including swords, staves, kali sticks, nunchaku, and shuriken.

Following exposure to the cosmic radiation from the Incursions, Shang-Chi was able to create an unlimited number of duplicates of himself.

While I have been a Lifetime fan of Marvel comics and their films, I have never heard of this Shang-Chi character before.

A bold move from Marvel; I'll keep watch on its development and see if my interest peaks.

Honestly, if they're doing Shang-Chi why not consider a more known martial arts character such as Iron Fist?

Or at least feature the two together:

That would open the door to Daredevil and Luke Cage as well, bringing back the Netflix characters in movie format. I know Iron Fist never did great on Netflix but he'd still have some exposure, compared to whoever Shang-Chi is.

I'm surprised they aren't casting Michael b jordan to be the lead. Could be cool I've never heard of this character.
