I think it's really funny how all the specifications reflect a two-disc release except the price. You'd think that if WB were going to skimp on this release, they could bring the price per disc down as a result. Instead, this will probably end up being more expensive than one of their HD video TV seasons where they cram 900-1100 minutes onto four discs. Certainly, the list price is $4.98 extra ($54.97 vs. $49.99), which means that the price per Blu-ray is some $27.48 each. I see that Best Buy has it for $49.99 already, but the most recent seasons of Gotham and Supergirl were $32.99 and $37.99, respectively on their release weeks, so it will be interesting to see where the final sale price gets to before the week of June 4th.
I guess you have to pay the salary of the person who spends the time to crush down the content that much further for this release. |

We're not guaranteed more discs than this with WAC (but it's very likely), but we are guaranteed uncompressed audio, which we weren't given here. The original Scooby Doo Where Are You has been on Prime Video (UK) in HD for at least 2 years and it looks good. It's also 4:3 so I expect the 1.78 ratio is a listing error which fails to mention the video will be 1.33 pillarboxed wthin the 16:9 frame.
Likewise with 5.1 audio. Would prefer the original mono as an option too. I guess with The Addams Family still missing it means the opening credits will still be slightly re-edited. Although this fairly basic type of animation doesn't need the bitrate of a high octane movie, fitting 23 x 43m onto 2 discs seems to be pushing things a bit. |

In other words, technically, the image is 1.78:1 with only the 1.33:1 picture area used and the sides matted off as black. I think the reason this is mentioned, although the whole marketing of it is absurdly convoluted, is because some older standard definition TVs (probably only 4:3 ones) will show the DVD windowboxed as it's technically a 1.78:1 image--so you would see the black bars on the sides, but also, you would see black bars on the top and bottom, the way that 4:3 TVs used to show any kind of widescreen film. |

I'm not entirely sure what you mean, given that I was trying to interpret the language WB used, but you can certainly produce DVDs (and Blu-rays) with 4:3 content that is not matted into a 16:9 image, if that's what you're asking.

What I'm saying is, it definitely is someone's interpretation of 4:3 for modern DVD. There's no other way of it being 16:9 and preserving the original AR. |

In fact, the whole point of the post by rdodolak I was originally responding to was about how the very confusing language quoted on the new DVD package further muddles the situation. It appears to be WHV's definition of a DVD that is actually 16:9 pillarboxed 4:3 (as opposed to simply 4:3 1.33:1), but the language used is unnecessarily confusing. All they needed to say is: Presented in a "pillarbox" format preserving the aspect ratio of its original television exhibition. The word "widescreen" should not be anywhere in the description if the video is indeed 1.33:1, because 99% of consumers have no idea that modern 4:3 DVDs are now matted into a 16:9 frame, and most people perceive 1.78:1 or "widescreen" as the antithesis of 1.33:1, which, of course, used to be called "fullscreen" or "standard" in the days of 4:3 TVs. |
