I am not a fan of hyperbole, and I usually like to let things sit for a year or two before passing judgment, but honestly I've already watched it twice and I truly think it's the single best thing I've seen on television in my entire life. It's spectacular on every possible level.

I read the book right before I watched the miniseries, it's an amazing book, and it's weird they came out around the same time, but aren't related. Mazin actually mentions once on the podcast, I think, that he wishes he had the book when he was writing, but his research is exceptional too. They're perfect companion pieces.

![]() I think each of those have things to recommend them, but this is such a spectacular accomplishment on every level - writing, direction, acting, cinematography, score, production design, sound design. I have truly never seen anything like it in my entire life. It's up there with only a few features in its sheer mastery of craft. Again, the best marker for the level of quality of the miniseries, to my mind, is the fact that Daniel Day-Lewis was originally set to play the lead, before he retired from acting, according to Jared Harris. Yes, it's that good. ![]() I'm also amazed by how it manages to be a searing, insightful commentary on the current political situation, without ever once directly addressing it. Mazin brilliantly chose a historical narrative that works as a deep metaphor for the world around us. Even more fascinating, people on both sides of the political spectrum seem to be claiming it and reading meaning into it. However, it should be stressed that Mazin has made crystal clear in interviews exactly which meanings he intended, and how he objects to some of the people who have been reading things into it that he did not intend. I was overwhelmed with emotion multiple times during the series, both by the epic scale of the heroism and tragedy in the story it was telling, which was largely hidden form the world when it happened, and also from the sheer filmmaking genius on display in how the story was being told. I have truly never seen anything like it on television, and I've seen almost all the shows you listed. ![]() |

What I loved most about the series that it didnt fall for the same routine to over-dramatize everything, where everybody and their grandma have a backstory explained. Here it was focussed, and the drama plays out in a horrific way but it never overplays its card. Like the series creator also said in the podcasts "The events themselves are dramatic enough, so we didnt add anything to it".

[Show spoiler] They shot those scenes, but cut them because they were outside the focus of what they wanted.
