Forgive my ignorance, as I am just seeing this. The Amazon site is rather vague. Is this an all region edition, with English as the default language? Thanks.

Sorry about that confusion. The early discussion in this thread is that the 'version' sold here is 60i which will play fine here. The UK set is 50i which will only play on players that can convert that over here. If ordered from Amazon US you'll be fine

Bought this from Amazon and it arrived yesterday. Was packaged in a box that closely approximated the size of the box set so box and contents were in mint/near mint condition. Taking the top of the box off was fun as I got the desired "What the hell is that?" reaction from the wife.

No playback issues on an Oppo 203. Only angst is flipping back and forth from 4:3 to fullscreen as I'm paranoid about burn in on the old LG E6P...

Sounds great and looks about as well as it is ever going to look considering the source material.

Now to quit my job to have the time to watch it AND read the 4 lengthy accompanying books!!

Lo and behold, the entire run turned up on Netflix and they look pretty wonderful. I'm guessing it's the new restoration because I've grown up with these since the 80's and I've never seen them look like this. I'll definitely be picking up this set, but am just enjoying going through them again here.

I'm not exactly a streaming guy and want to own these physically, but the price point is high and I'm enjoying seeing them this way till I have it in the budget to pick them up- which I will. Kids and all...

The episodes on Netflix are the same old unrestored episodes that are missing bits here and there.

I think the Netflix run might be based off the UK DVD run which (if I remember correctly) used a better master than the US A&E DVDs which had been used for tapes since the 90’s.

I just ordered this set, but unfortunately it seems that one of the episodes is still annoyingly cut, according to the Digital Bits review. The bus conductor scene in the episode “Blood, Devastation, Death, War, & Horror” is STILL missing the bit where Graham sings a PARODY of a line from “Tonight” from West Side Story. WTF??? The bit IS included in the extras, so why the F**K couldn’t they have left the bit in the episode proper? Is it really for copyright reasons? This would be fair use, it’s a PARODY after all...”Tonight, tonight, I’m getting pissed tonight...”.

Ironically, the scene is intact on my old laserdisc volume.

Not under UK law, where fair use is limited to research (primarily private study or a school exam), direct quotation in criticism or reporting current events. There is a provision for parody, but even after being amended in 2014 it's so astonishingly vague that it offers no real protection and is open to legal challenge where it can come down to whether a judge finds it funny (ergo parody) or not (ergo plagiarism or commercial harm). More problematic is that it doesn't apply to printed music.

My guess is that, unless it's a picture/sound quality issue, since the restored episodes will be used for future broadcast the owners didn't want to chance it but Network figured they'd take the chance including it as an extra.

finally got mine. i can confirm they play in an xbox one on my vizio 65" m658-g1. they look incredible. as someone who works at a company that archives video and film, i can say they did a great job. the quad 2" videotape looks as good as it possibly can. the film portions (especially terry gilliam's animations) look fantastic! there is even a 17-minute feature on the last disc where the person who did the restorations is showing terry gilliam before and after footage of his animations and even terry is amazed.

also, i got mine from amazon, via importcds, and it arrived with a damaged box. probably no way to get a replacement box anymore, especially since i didn't get it straight from the original company, but oh well. all of the discs and the individual boxes for them were fine. can't wait to dive into the four extremely detailed books that came with them.

odd, that in the feature where the guy is showing gilliam how he restored everything, he shows how he made possible a couple transitions from animation to live action that were intended, but never realized in the original run of the series. they actually show the changed transitions. then, i watched that episode, and the transitions weren't there. i wonder what happened between when he showed gilliam and when they finished the episode. did he forget?

Is there a list of missing special features that were on the old A&E DVDs? BTW, BBC America is showing the remastered Python episodes.

Kind of. The master which was used for the Sony UK DVDs was upscaled for the HD masters which Netflix uses. But when it was upscaled, something was done to the colors, so they actually look less accurate than the DVDs, albeit with the appearance of HD.
