Well, you never know. This is a Universal property, so I imagine it might be a co-production and likely the biggest production Blumhouse has had yet.

Even $20M is pushing it for them.

Their upcoming Fantasy Island movie is a Sony property and the production budget for that is at $7M.

That's cheap, as expected for Blumhouse.

I expect the budget to be $20M or less.

You really think they'll go that high? I remember reading a report that they were hesitant to spend $10M for The Purge: Anarchy.

This is more effects heavy, so this will probably be their most expensive film to date.

They'll probably bite the bullet to make this their most expensive film.

Im not gonna jump on the hate bandwagon yet. Everyone crapped on the 2011 movie before release and that turned out pretty damn good considering. The 80's movie is untouchable so why not. Its a great concept.

I think I would rather a setting outside the antarctic now though.

I really enjoyed the prequel but the mostly bad cgi really took me out of those scenes, sadly. This Blumhouse remake is going to have less than 1/10 the budget. Maybe it will be more of a thriller and not have very many effect shots at all. If that's the case I think it can work but that's not what the majority of people are expecting.

All this talk of The Thing needing some huge budget is complete nonsense, it's a small intimate movie that's gonna need some CG here and there, it's not ****ing Lord of the Rings. They could easily do it on a $30mill budget if they don't blow their load on famous names, and why would they? Carpenter's film barely had anyone famous in it, just solid character actors that weren't trying to steal the show.

I'd say $30-50 million to do it right, but that is kinda high for Blumhouse, no? Which is the point. Usually they specialize in low budget movies that are always under $10 million usually. Sometimes $5 million. At least it seems that way.

$30 million is pretty low budget these days, especially for a science fiction movie that will need a good bit of CG, most likely. Halloween was $10 million, but there really wasn't any CG and only a couple of names in the cast.

I'm not gonna hate on this outright and I'll be open-minded. I love the original and Carpenter films and don't like the prequel. My problem with this new one is that just when the dust is cleared on Ridley Scott's new Alien movies and they appear to be dead and I'm thinking maybe Del Toro can get At The Mountains Of Madness off the ground, this comes along. Sigh.

The Thing doesn't need anything more than a relatively modest set built in a snowy location, a relatively small ensemble cast, and just a handful of relatively modest CGI sequences, and if somehow they can't do the CG on a modest budget, they can go practical.

This is not a high concept film, period. It's a claustrophobic sci-fi horror. Two years ago Life was made on a $58mill budget with the likes of Ryan Reynolds, Rebecca Ferguson, and Jake Gyllenhaal in what was essentially a space-set rehash of The Thing. If they can make that film for $60mill, you can damn well be sure you can make The Thing on a smaller budget.

From what i understand the manuscript is 45 pages longer than the short. I wonder just what major plot points got skipped. Is it enough to make a legit movie that is not just a retelling? But hey, if someone makes this, and does it right excellent. As far as budget I would say $20-$30 million is doable.

I was wondering myself how this might affect a potential At the Mountains of Madness movie. Who knows? This remake of The Thing could further hinder the possibility of At the Mountains of Madness ever making it to the screen, but if The "New" Thing is successful enough it could actually spur interest in a studio taking on that particular Lovecraft story, simply because of their thematic similarities.

Although, I wouldn't be too surprised if it turns out that the At the Mountains of Madness movie we get isn't helmed by Guillermo Del Toro after all these years, but instead becomes Richard Stanley's third entry in his Lovecraft film trilogy following Color Out of Space and The Dunwich Horror.

There's no way Blum/Universal can even remotely match Carpenter's film.

Carpenter, Morricone, Dean Cundy, Rob Bottin, Kurt Russell & cast... that film is a masterpiece.
