This has been one of those conversions at the top of my wishlist. Really hope this event stays on the schedule, my local AMC is showing it and I am already off work that day!

Great to see that it's finally releasing in the US... hoping the UK release isn't too far off, because once it does, I'm booking my ticket with zero hesitation.

Problem is, my local Cineworld is closing on January, so I'll have to see this conversion at Showcase, the nearest 3D cinema. We'll know if it's being released here once it gets a BBFC submission - you have to submit a 3D version to them, you can't reuse the same certificate from 2001. We have a poster - looks like they really are using the British title in the US.

Back when they shot Sorcerer’s Stone/Philosopher’s Stone, they filmed every mention of the stone twice; one where they say “Sorcerer’s Stone” for the American cut, another where they say “Philosopher’s Stone” for the UK/international cut.
I suspect they’re releasing the UK edition in the US because only the UK cut was converted to 3D. |

Yeah, here in the US this is scheduled to be shown the same night as the Thursday night previews for Captain America 4, so I guess I'll be skipping it.
There's no way I would miss the opening night of a new MCU! ![]() |

In all fairness, the American distributor might be concerned that local audiences could get confused and believe this movie is about Harry Potter and a stoned philosopher.

I hate to say this because we’ll probably never see this released again… but this is an absolutely stellar conversion. It was done around 2020, when Studio Conversions were at their peak of strength and quality, and it absolutely shows. The depth is fantastic and consistent throughout the run time. The volume feels tactile… the detail work is impressive Shots with hundreds of crashing envelopes, flying keys, and floating candles come to mind)… and if you’re a pop out fan you’ve got some amazing shots to look forward to (bursting rubble, cracking eggshells, and of course a golden snitch or two.)
Seriously a shame this will likely never be played again. I think it’s screening the next two thursdays, so if you have a theater within driving distance that’s got it running, it’s a no-brainer to check this out. There was also a short introduction by Leonard Maltin sharing some fun facts about the production and explaining why this release is “Philosopher’s Stone” here… unfortunately no details at all on the 3D conversion in the intro. 5/5, one of the best. If it was releases on BD3D it would be up there was Jurassic Park, Titanic, Great Gatsby, and Moana on my list of most-replayed 3D movies. |

Just got back from my showing and I have to say that I was quite disappointed with the 3D on this. As this is a movie with a lot of dark environments, there was a ton of crosstalk visible on things like candles and torches. There was very little depth throughout the movie thanks to some VERY conservative use of separation. The highlight sequences were unsurprisingly the Quidditch scenes in which case the Snitch popped out of the screen and danced around in your face before retreating back into the screen - good stuff. But that was not enough to make me feel like my $20 was well-spent. My theater's screen was also ever-so-slightly out of focus in a certain spot, but this was not the reason for the aforementioned issues; it just added to an already disappointing showing. While I'm thankful for the chance to see any 3D movie these days, this is one that had we gotten stateside in 2001 would have just confused audiences struggling to find the differences between it and the 2D version.

Always seems to go that way with 3D… though I will say this movie had objectively a strong level of separation — verified by peaking outside my glasses throughout the movie… The relative separation between the center of focus and the background/foreground objects were always pretty high! (It breaks the immersion for a second, but I do this as a habit now to make sure the screen matches to my perception.)
Sounds like maybe there were some projection issues that might have contaminated that showing ![]() |

Just saw it as a double feature as well. While I thought the overall image looked a tad darker and very mild color muting when compared to the 4K UHD HDR color grading, I thought the 3D image was very good (I'd give the 3D presentation a 7.5/10 rating)

The Midwest Marcus Theatres chain is showing the first Harry Potter movie from 2001, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in 3D for the first time in the USA, a Fathom Entertainment event.
I saw it last Thursday evening and there will be another showing this Thursday, Feb 20. The 3D added a lot to the Quidditch game sequences and to the grandeur and size of the dining hall. I now can't imagine the movie not in 3D! Questions: When was this 2001 movie converted to 3D (there was no mention of who did it in the credits)? Why have I not heard about it before? Has anyone else heard of it? Why hasn't it been mentioned on this forum? When and where was it shown in 3D outside of the USA? Hopefully, Turbine will release a 3D Blu-ray of it. BTW: My #1 Turbine 3D release wish is Peter Jackson's They Shall Not Grow Old! Please, please! |
