Bruce in Returns is Edward Scissorhands in a Batsuit. It doesn't understand the character. It's just a weird interpretation.

I think Phoenix delivers the best performance, but Nicholson is still my favourite live-action portrayal of The Joker.

It's a masterpiece of art direction and creativity from a truly unique mind... but it's not that great as a "Batman" film. Keaton was fantastic for what he brought to the character, but again Burton was clearly more focused and interested in the villains.

Ah, yeah. As for Schumacher... It's difficult to read a list of his body of work and make an observation on what kind of director he was, or why he picked the projects he did. His best films seemed to be dramas or thrillers.

The irony being his very existence as a wealthy aristocrat being responsible for this state of affairs, you see the different parts of his broken phyche relfected in Max Shrek, Catwoman and Penguin in this way.
That's all good on paper, but on film it tends to get lost in Burton's eccentricities and overshadowed by so much of the facade. The film just feels empty to me.

And like I said Returns campy as hell, i mean Penguin driving a toy batmobile.

Forever gets a bad rep cause of Batman and Robin, and I think Returns gets more love because of Batman 89. Altho Forever did make more $ than Returns so maybe back in the day it was more appreciated.

I enjoy all 3, hate B&R. But this is the correct order

Batman, Forever and Returns.

TBH, Returns is just the 60's show having a midlife crisis.

...And I absolutely love it. Prime Burton.

All this Forever talk I think I will rewatch it 2night.

On another Forever note, most of the time I think about the movie I always get a kick of Tommy Lee Jones apparently telling Jim Carrey “I cannot sanction your buffoonery”. Lmao.

I often think about this anecdote whenever I rewatch the film. It really doesn't show on screen, though. They're both as zany as each other.

There's also the story in which Schumacher told Kilmer to one side and told him off for being rude and unprofessional, resulting in Kilmer giving him the silent treatment for the next two weeks.

After Schumacher's passing, I recently rewatched Batman Forever and Batman & Robin. I think B&R gets a bad rap. It's just campy neon fun, an updated version of the old TV show. As for Forever, the last time I watched it, I hated it. TLJ matching manic comedy with Jim Carrey was absolutely grating. This time, I enjoyed it more.

I've always loved Returns, and the '89 original has grown on me over the years, after being underwhelmed by it for a long time. So:

- Batman Returns
- Batman '89
- Batman Forever = Batman & Robin

I would have liked an official version, but I saw a fan edit years back when the deleted scenes were first released (DVD? VHS? I don't know how.). It was not 3 hours long, though, heck no. I also remember those rumors of a fifth movie supposedly involving Harley getting revenge for Batman killing the Joker. She was like his daughter or something. Heh.

It does kinda warm my heart seeing B&R slowly gain some love and appreciation. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still one of the worst comic films, but if you go into it with a certain mindset it is still entertaining.

Makes for an awesome drinking movie too.

The Dark Knight is better then 1-6 easily IMO. It’s one of, if not the best comic book related movies & the best Batman film.

Yeah, it's not a popular opinion, but dropping a guy in a rubber bat suit in the middle of a Michael Mann thriller... it just doesn't work for me.

The other films designed the world around Batman in an exaggerated way.

It feels natural when Batman walks around this city:

It looks silly (IMO) seeing him in modern day Chicago:

Also, that damn voice:

Each city feels natural for the type of film each film is. I don't want Burton's film to look like Nolan's or vice versa. I will say though, after four films of Gotham looking like a backlot with some matte paintings, it was a breath of fresh air, in 2005, to have Gotham feel like a real living city. Indeed, a character all its own. And to have Bruce outside Gotham. The comics do this all the time and in the comics, Gotham tends to look more like Chicago than Burton's vision for the city, but irregardless, each one works for each film, just as Schumacher's does for his films.

I rewatched Nolan's trilogy a couple of weeks ago and man, I love Bale's voice. I have never understood the problem.

My ranking:

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice
The Dark Knight Rises
Batman Begins
The Dark Knight
Batman (1989)
Batman Forever
Batman Returns
Batman & Robin
