Martin, I suppose from the screen that you are a projectionist, you'll be showing Tenet in an Atmos auditorium or in a normal one?

Hey, yes I am, and I’ll be showing it in a normal one, with a 5.1 setup. Anyway, I don’t think there’s an Atmos version, the only version I have seen for now is 5.1, but I do hope I’m wrong and that it’s just that it’s available somewhere else.

Yeah, so I was right. Now the fact is: if I'm not saying a bullsh**, if the movie has an Atmos mix, the mix created for cinemas non equiped with atmos should be a 7.1, Am I right? Do you remember some Atmos movies being showed as 7.1 for your movie theater?

Yes usually for Atmos movies, we have a choice between Atmos, 7.1 and 5.1 versions. But Tenet only has a 5.1 file for now.

Like I said, maybe it’s available somewhere else in Atmos. I use two platforms to download movies, Globecast and Cinego. I looked it up on Globecast and it’s only in 5.1, on Cinego it’s not available at all yet. Maybe there will be physical DCPs with Atmos. And maybe those cinemas are just saying nonsense. I have no idea. The movie is out at the end of the month, so there’s time to push different versions.

But I wouldn’t hold my breath, official communication from Warner France says the sound is 5.1, and they don’t usually make mistakes.

But for us in Italy is totally a different thing, as often movies come in Atmos in cinemas but in every bluray we have comes with a sh*tty Dolby Digital 5.1. Rarely we have some DTSHD or DD+ 7.1. You frenchs and germans always get Atmos quality
Are you talking about dubbed versions or English with subtitles ? It would indeed be frustrating if you didn’t have the best version for at least the original language.

No, no, OV is the best, usually Atmos or DTSHD, but the dubbed versions, and trust me, we have some excellent dubbers, are awful and compressed as sh**

Majority of dubbed / secondary audios are lossy in nature throughout the world, although there are a few exceptions.

I saw / heard this in IMAX laser and it was SO LOUD (ear bleed loud), the dialogue was near inaudible - it really solidified that the sound mixers that Nolan hires and uses don't hear the final product in an actual IMAX theater setup.

I agree, I saw it in 15/70 IMAX also and it was not set as loud as the laser screening with the new IMAX 12-channel system was. Not sure why they weren't calibrated to the same reference level.

I preferred the laser in almost all regards though. Since Dunkirk, I have taken my -15dB custom musicians plugs to every screening...just in case. I've found myself using them for the last few 90 min trips to Toronto I've taken for IMAX screenings, which has been The Last Jedi (waste of time, didn't realize Rian had cropped all the footage shot with the IMAX cameras), First Man and The Rise of Skywalker.

I'll definitely have them on me for Tenet, they reduce perfectly so the treble isn't muffled like foam plugs would, but they leave the physiological effects of the bass intact - magic stuff. Had had tinnitus since 2009, don't need it getting any worse.

Is there a reliable list of theaters in the DMV area that are screening this in 70mm?

I don't think it's the sound folk, but Nolan himself. He's gone on record saying that he believes the environmental sounds are more important than the dialog to give the audience impact he wants to achieve. He's not willing to duck down the effects and music to make dialog more easily heard.

The sound peeps are following his direction.

Would also like to know this. Not sure if I'll even go see it, but curious to know what the options are.

For anyone still wondering, I’ve asked Warner, and they confirmed it’s only going to be 5.1. No other version is coming.

Mind asking Warner Bros France how many minutes was shot with IMAX cameras?

I'm also after this as well.
