Thumbs up Chopper to see BD release in 2021

Finally - my all-time fav Australian movie, 'Chopper' sees an official BD release on its 20th birthday.

It was meant to be released last week but got pushed to next month. It is getting distribution through Madman.

I already owned the DVD, bought it ages ago at JB HiFi. I do hope the Sunburnt Screens BD edition of 'Head On' is worthy. Was always bummed I missed getting it but maybe it was a blessing. Own the DVD.

The one under-rated Aussie gem I rarely seen mentioned in hope-for re-releases is 'Spider & Rose'. Again, I am lucky to own an original copy of the DVD but would friggin' love to see it remasterd on BD with extras etc

All three of these films are in my top 5 Aussie films and thrilled two will be updated to BD in my personal collection by year end <3

Chopper’s not part of Sunburnt is it? Hate to have a gap in the collection because I definitely won’t buy Chopper.

Loved the bit where Farkas gets flashed by the police just past Flinders Street Station, then pulls over next to Luna Park.

I was just thinking today, would Salute of the Jugger be considered Australian enough to be a contender for this one? I mean, it was made by an American company with an imported main cast but the entire thing was filmed in the outback and all the crew and extras were Aussies. It's a great little post-apocalyptic genre piece that's never gotten the credit it deserves and has always received piss-poor treatment on home video. It certainly deserves better than the upscaled Japanese release that's currently the only BD of the full international cut.

I'd consider it Australian, but I don't think it suits this line. Maybe the Ozploitation Classics line?

That would also work. I just want it on BD full stop, haha. Whether it's even possible is another story.

Turns out the re-release of Head On has a new commentary by Anna Kokkinos so even if it is the same shitty transfer as the first release this feature alone makes this release make it a worthwhile buy for me.

I certainly be reporting back on this thread about the visual quality next week. A quick comparison to the DVD will be my clearest reference.

I've noticed a gap in releases/announcements for spine number 17. Do we know what it will be?

I honestly think they just stuffed up and put the wrong number on the spine of Playing Beatie Bow. It was listed on Sanity and Stack as #17 prior to release.

I’d like to see Umbrella add Blackrock to this line. Particularly the original uncut version which is now scarcely available.

Easily one of the strangest Australian films I've seen.

Glad it's coming

Any recommendations of titles from this line for someone keen to get into more Aussie new wave - preferably the 'first time on BD' films? Only have their release of The Last Wave and keen to discover more. Sunday Too Far Away, Dingo and Malcolm seemed the most interesting to me at first glance so would appreciate some thoughts on those!

Also; cheapest way to import Umbrella films to the UK? I see a few select titles scattered on Amazon but typically going for £20 a piece, is their own storefront the best bet?

Sunday Too Far Away is a terrific movie, well worth a punt IMO.

I saw Malcolm many years ago and have pretty fond memories of it (although i haven't got around to importing it as of yet - has a quirky charm that may not be for everyone.)

Although i haven't seen it i know Shame is a very highly thought of film - i will probably get it at some stage.

Umbrella do have sales now and then - i think some of the Sunburnt releases do show up in them so worth keeping an eye open.

Edit - Just had a look at Amazon and the prices of these have jumped up a fair bit in the last year or so - i own 3 or 4 of these and i paid £18 a pop(including P&P) from Umbrella - they had a special deal on though if i remember correctly.

Sadly, Shirley Barrett has terminal cancer. She wrote a very poignant piece for The Guardian recently about it.

It’d be nice if people rediscover her film while she’s still around.

Death in Brunswick is next.

It's funny. I did't remember this movie at all but as I watched the trailer it felt like every scene was deja vu, like I must have watched this a few times when I was a kid. Another one of those movies you'll never see again because no-one gives two shits about making movies with local themes these days.
