Yeah it was great!
[Show spoiler]The first part had me riveted, and then the twist like whoa, I didn't not see that coming at all.
Not many movies keep my full attention these days.

I finally managed to get a cheap used copy for only $10 at my FYE. It even had the digital code and slip. That was the only way I was going to buy this thing. If nothing else, this film should at least be watched for the excellent music score and the costume design.

Not really. This movie just exploited its subject matter for the sack of cheap drama. If you’re going to make a film about a serious topic like this, then you better bring your A game. In this case, the filmmakers were clearly not talented enough.

If you know even a little bit about history, then there are several clues that would have given it away, a particularly egregious one being
[Show spoiler]the confederate soldiers chanting the Nazi slogan Blood and Soil. That alone is suspicious.

That's fine. Seems like every movie with a twist has people that figured it all out ahead of time. I don't try to look for them and like being surprised by them.

I enjoyed it, thought the 4k looked great too.

My Oppo is in storage right now and this was the first UHD I've watched on my Series X so I'm not really sure what to say about it. There were things I liked and things I didn't but I have no idea what to attribute to the player since I'm not at all familiar with how it handles 4K media. Anyway, my overall impressions were good and I'm inclined to say it's worth it for Janelle Monáe alone.

The movie itself? It was okay. I enjoyed it but I wish it had a little more faith in its own audience. It gets a little preachy at times and I don't think this is the type of movie that needs to do that--its take on the subject matter is more than justified and sometimes it's a little too on the nose in pushing its themes onto the viewer. The type of folks who would enjoy the movie already get it, and the type of people who would take exception to it aren't really worth the effort so it just seemed like they could have stuck to the story and characters and the film would have been better for it.

I managed to watch this movie the way I wish more people had (and the way I wish I could have watched more movies): knowing virtually nothing about it. This was the ultimate blind buy for me.

And I ended up liking it way more than I would have had I even seen the trailer (which I understand is what soured a lot of people on the movie itself; it exposed the main premise of the movie in a way that either a.) promised more than it could have delivered or b.) made the twist super predictable.)

But for me, the twist isn't the reason to watch it, so the fact that it's predictable doesn't matter to me.
[Show spoiler]I did find myself kinda wishing I hadn't seen The Village, however, as I thought this movie did it way better and it would have been pretty awesome to be genuinely shocked by the ending.

I didn't find the movie "preachy," though a few remarks later in the movie
[Show spoiler](i.e. "cuck" and "snowflake" by the same pair of characters) were a bit, as the post above said, on the nose. Like, we already ****ing hate those characters and know they're evil shit. We already know exactly who they equate to in real life. Having them talk like that makes them into caricatures, which dilutes their evil.

The UK won’t be getting a 4K release, with Lionsgate/Sky Cinema releasing it on Blu-ray and DVD on 2nd August.

When I watched this, I thought that
[Show spoiler]everything was presented in chronological order, so for most of the movie I was trying to wrap my head around how it would be possible.
It also made the movie seen even worse. I suspect I'd like it more on a rewatch. The PQ was excellent, especially the bright outdoor scenes on the plantation. I loved the look of the opening scene. Not much in terms of Atmos.

Well
[Show spoiler]there wouldn't be a twist if it was presented chronologically.
