I actually don't think it is. It is more of a moody/sensualist piece. The ideas in it are pretty simple, but they are obscured by the style.

It had a good reputation at release. Reviewed decently and was on a ton of top 10 lists. Also got two Oscar nominations. It's biggest 'flaw' for getting a new release seems to be the fact that it didn't make anyone involved any money.

Sure, but good isn't the same as great. Unlike There Will Be Blood, there were many loud dissenting voices.

I do agree that the fact that it didn't make any money is ultimately the biggest obstacle to getting a new release.

WB just dumped it into theaters. It didn't play on more than 300 screens at one time.

I'm kinda surprised none of the limited sites have done anything. Nova or Kimchi should be all over this...

Tied for favorite movie with TWBB. I'll pay $50 for a better release.

I think it’s criminal that this excellent film was released on a BD25? This film is deserving of a BD-50 accompanied w/trailer, lossless audio, an awards recognition list, Director’s Commentary, or at least a Brad Pitt commentary, deleted scenes. Incredible performances by Brad & Casey. The supporting cast is marvelous as well. If Criterion could give us a better presentation I’d happily depart w/ my hard earned money. Flawless Top 10 western of all time.

It's actually deserving of a 4K UHD by now.

Roger Deakins' Cinematography deserves a 50GB disc with bitrates of 35 mbps or higher (and not the constant bitrate garbage Shout uses). Unless a Japanese release comes out with a high bitrate (Japan is probably the only country where their Blus are always 30 mbps as a minimum), or a UHD is released, then this classic is stuck with Warner's incompetence.

I could easily see Criterion releasing this at some point.

It's a hard life for movies released circa 2006-2008.

IIRC the director said Criterion rejected it, said they weren’t interested. Criterion do some dumb things sometimes, that’s one of them.

EDIT: I do recall correctly, see post #47

A terrible, pointless release 6 years ago is still a terrible, pointless release.

Default After The Deluge

Well, given the original release is still available for a price under $10, unless someone is willing to pony up for something special, such as a true director's/extended cut ala Tree of Life, there's no surprise that Criterion passed on simply adding a few extras and calling it a release.

Perhaps after the deluge.

I have the DVD, but wouldn't that film be right in Criterion's wheelhouse?

Yes, it most certainly would. I can’t believe this never saw a Blu release anywhere.

Yeah. Silly Criterion. Releasing well-regarded movies that some people like. Ridiculous.
