I knew about the 76 movie but haven't seen seen it. After watching the 33 version, I'm in and I think I might have to go on a Kong viewing trip now.
Glad you enjoyed it! I first saw '33 as a young teen and really loved it, still do. It holds up really well - not in the sense that the effects are 'convincing' by any modern standard, but it holds up in terms of pacing, visual style, and just creature adventure.

Hope you enjoy '76 when you watch it - Have you seen the '05 version? I know that one can be controversial depending on which thread we're in but overall I thought it was a stellar remake. It doesn't replace '33 for me, but it's a great companion to it. If you haven't seen it yet, I'd recommend the full Kong history tour of '33, '76, and then ending on '05. It's cool to see the different takes of a nearly-identical story.

The movie gets some stick - but honestly I liked it as a kid. I might have pick this up.

That's a great feeling when you discover something old with a rather hefty reputation and you realize that the reputation is completely earned.

No. I'm not big on CG unless there's no other choice. I like Peter Jackson but I didn't really have any interest in a remake with a CG Kong.

Seeing the trailer for the 76 version got me excited seeing a mechanical Kong. That's the kind of stuff that I like to see.

I'll probably watch it Jackson's and the Skull Island movie eventually but my preference is for practical effects.

Nice, just when I bought an over expensive Japanese release... Anyway, glad to double dip for the TV version, which I never saw. Here's hoping for the new transfer, but an original stereo (and mono as a nice bonus!) would be even nicier...

for all its faults, Jackson's CGI Kong was rather spectacular compared to the monkeysuit

Really great to see the wealth of enthusiastic responses to this announcement; here's hoping this turns out to be a Kong-sized hit for Scream.

Probably too much to hope for, but I'd love to see new interviews with Lange and/or Bridges for this release...and a film historian commentary that doesn't pull any punches in relating what I've read was an arduous shoot and troubled production fraught with special-effects headaches would be a terrific plus.

The faults in the script definitely outweigh CGI Kong.

It's worth it to see Bridges doing his dude vibe while running around screaming.

I'm pretty excited for this, I haven't seen it before, but it seems like something I'd be into. I prefer practical effects and like Jeff Bridges, so I'd imagine I'd like it more than the Peter Jackson movie (which I don't hate).

I am a bit surprised Shout was able to get this. Just seemed like one of those titles Paramount would want to hang on to even though they were never going to do anything with it. But I'm glad Shout got it, I doubt Paramount would have bothered including the extended version or anything beyond a trailer.

Shout having this and Explorers gives me hope for Dragonslayer.

Either way, I'm not surprised at all. Also, maybe Paramount didn't want to shell out for a 4K restoration that seems to be obligatory for their Presents line.

Anyway, fans should be happy either way, especially considering Paramount probably would not have included the extended TV cut
I dunno this was a pretty damn huge release. It dominated, along with Jaws, '76 movie talk and was all over TV for years. I think was bigger than Ghost was in it's day. I'm a little stunned they didn't go for it themselves and with 4k UHD to boot. But then they always seem to have this weird burying of it even since arrival of blu-ray era. Of coruse they did the same strange thing with Pretty In Pink for years too.

I actually caved in on Dragonslayer and got it on VUDU for $4.99 during a couple day sale recently. Hell of a film.
